Here in the south west of England there is an 85 mile ancient track called The Ridgeway. It is built on chalk and runs from Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire to East Kennet, just south of Avebury. The Ridgeway is littered with the creations of ancient cultures such as burial mounds, hill carvings, hill forts and Avebury itself; a village partly surrounded by a large stone circle. (The village isn't ancient, just the stone circle) When AnMal came to Swindon, I took her to see Avebury and West Kennet Long Barrow - a neolithic burial mound. I thought I would share some of my photos with you all. You are welcome to use them in your creations.

The first thing you see when you get off the bus is the Red Lion pub with it's fake Tudor "beams"



We decided to visit West Kennet Long Barrow first and had to pass Silbury Hill on the way. Silbury hill was once labeled "The largest manmade mound in Europe" and might still be. Nobody knows it's purpose.

They are not random Moko they are positioned carefully in a large circle with other circles inside and a stone avenue leading to another monument on overton hill. It's all part of ancient religion.

You're not simple minded Moko. The photos don't show the shape very well. If I had a helicopter I would take an aerial view for you.

Nice one Rod. That's a classic photo. I used to have an artists impression of what it used to look like before stones were removed and it was quite amazing.

Have you ever checked out the buildings in the area to see if any were moved long ago for the purpose of construction? This would be similar to the Egyptian pyramids being ransacked for building blocks.

Yeah, that's exactly what they used them for. There are now concrete posts marking where stones used to be.
