I am trying to change some penguins from yellow, blue red and green. I want to change them to black and I tried desaturation, then tried levels but I only got the black with the blue one. The others just changed to different shades of gray. I have done it before, now I forget what I did. Can some one help?

Thanks Esper, I will try that. I am not sure if I tried that one or not, I will post back after I try it.
EDIT: I tried that before and then again but it doesn't work for me. I got the blue one to change but the rest turned either all white or all black and moving the sliders back and forth made the like a patch quilt. It also took or the orange beak and feet.

colors - colorize (Saturation=0; lightness=-100)

yes, I did. I thought I did write back. hmmm Anyway, I can't get them to turn black and leave the beak and feet orange.

Try the and grow by 1 pixel and go to colorize and turn all the way down to black.
For the yellow if the beak gets selected try to unselect with the .

Ok, I have the XCF you sent but I posted the one I did by mistake. your xcf if 5 colored layers of pengy

thanks Moko,I tried that yesterday and the color selector just selects part of the color cuz if you look real close, there are a lot of shades of the same hue and it only selects part of it.

I sent black ones too, early this afternoon. Something must be blocking our emails.

there is a trick tstandiford shared in one of his layermask tutorials

when desaturating, Gimp sees green as the lightest colour and blue as the darkest (red is somewhere between)
so maybe changing the color of the yellow penguin before desaturating helps getting it dark


also there was this colorizer filter, that you can use to change colours
was it in G'MIC ?
you paint a bit of colour where you want it, and the filter changes it completely

What happened to the little red ones foot?

He is skipping and dancing so hard it is up under him cuz he has slivers on the bottom of his feet from the slivers from the boardwalk. He has gone non-stop for two weeks now.

Just had a play, tried posturising the image which helped a lot but got fairly successful results using the fuzzy select and colour picker with threshold set to between 50 and 70, still some pixels need tidying up though.

Just separate the penguins into separate layers then do threshold on each one.

Tried that ek worked o n the blue one 3 turned Gary and the yellow on returned white
