I took this in a park nearby.

Judging by the faded red in the lower wings it hatched last year.
The flower it's feeding on is a white butterfly bush (original is violet).
They lay their eggs on nettles.
Quite common in temperate parts of Europe and Asia.
In winter they survive in attics or holes in trees etc.

Gerard what a beautiful photo. How did you take it ? Telephoto lens, tripod? It is crystal clear , no sign of movement!. If my childhood Dutch is still good enough , it translates to Day Peacock Eye??.

There's also a "nachtpauwoog" which is a night moth and not as beautiful.
I use a monopod very often because my hands aren't a steady as they used to be.
I used a Panasonic FZ28 which has a 18x zoom lens.
No idea at what zoom this was taken.
@molly, if you look closely you see white spots at the end of the antennae.
Those are smelling organs.
