Just a little image done for a contest over on DA with the theme "Tea". It's fun to toy with a new character, you don't have to worry about similarity with anything coming before.

MyPaint + GIMP, a few hours.

Great work as usual. Lots of character and nice lighting as well as an excellently painted figure.

My only thing is the tea cup seems to be more defined than the person, but since the theme is "tea" then that's probably a good thing!

i like this character very much, he looks like a real personality. it's fun seeing him with that rather dainty looking (if a bit aged and cracked) tea cup

. i love the play of light and shadow in this painting and i am very impressed by the way you used colours to get the lighting right. and one thing about your work that always makes me a bit jealous is that you seem to focus on the right details all the time - you sort of don't say too much where it's not needed but you still manage to make it a very realistic looking picture.
i wonder a bit abut the tea cup, though. i can't put my finger on it, but it looks a bit wrong to me. of course, it could just be made that way

Imo it looks a bit like it's floating...Maybe that's what you see?

Reminds me of an old motorcycle mechanic I saw in Jaipur some years ago...

(*) now, the crack in the cup and saucer are a bit too wide to be realistic...

Thanks for the comments! I'm glad this seems to work out and that he does come across as a personality. The distribution of detail, as mentioned by AnMal, is an ongoing project. I work rather hard to learn to loosen up and not spend too much time over-detailing places which are not necessary.

As for those commenting on the tea cup, aye, from your input I can see three issues there:

* A thumb need to be more visible to show just how he's holding it
* The tea cup needs a tad darker shading
* The cracks of the cup and plate are a bit too extreme

I'll try to get down to fixing these. Thanks a lot for the useful feedback!
