Filter Gurus help

This is not my photo. One I got it from here

The photographer did a long exposure but wants the 'suns' removed [but not the lights]. Best I could do was by using a morphological filter but it took the white line out of the road.
Can anyone here get them out?

No idea.... tell him/her to redo the picture at a much wider aperture (because the "suns" are caused by the verys small aperture s/he used....). See http://photo.stackexchange.com/question ... -sometimes

If you asked to add the spikes there would be no problem

but removing them without
destroying the photograph seems impossible.
I'm sure somebody here will offer this and that but to be honest I wouldn't expect great results.
The automation would be problematic because saturation and luminosity of the spikes matches other
areas of the image and to completely remove them manually would probably take eons without guaranteed
success.
Is it worth the effort?
