Can't Type in Text Boxes

GIMP Version: 2.8.3
Operating System: Mac OS
OS Version: 10.9 Mavericks
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

I am trying to type in a text box but no letters appear. I hit '4' and it only enlarges the image. I have tried to copy and paste text into the text box, but that does not work either.

Try clicking where you want the text to be first then type your text

It is a known issue with Maverick.

Np need any longer for the workaround, AFAIK it has been fixed in 2.8.10?

Yes you should update when the new releases come out with bug fixes.

From what you have written in your post I'm wondering if your foreground / text colour is the same as your layer background.
Try changing foreground colour to something different from your layer colour then open up the text tool and try again.
