So, as many of you clearly can see I am inching away like a little caterpillar here everyday with my Gimp knowledge.

I ended up here (taking on the challenge and task...) as a result of a t-shirt/graphics project of mine I was working on (and still am only solo now...) with a graphics guy who basically bailed about 3/4's the way into the project

Learning the technical side wasn't quite my cup of tea, as I'm more of the visionary 'Artiste' type

Anywhoo, so months later i'm left with eons of .psd,.jpg and.png files to carry the 'vision' on with. I'd like to make some modifications to many of the designs.

Which leads me to my question.

When a .psd file is saved are the actual fonts used saved within the actual file? (didn't see them so, I wouldn't be surprised if the answer to that question is obvious ) I PRAY they are, or there's some logical solution to remedy the situation... which is to basically have all of the media (fonts) to edit the .psd's which will obviously become .xcf files?

You would have to have the fonts used to create the PSD's installed on your system or in Gimp for them to appear in the PSD once it's opened in Gimp.
I'm also not sure how Mac handles fonts.

If you have .psd files, you should be able to open them, and if you have 2.8 you have to export it as a .psd, saving only works with .xcf files.

You're going to have a hard time opening psd files without photoshop. Gimp doesn't really do psd, to my knowledge. The fonts that were used in your projects are still on the machine that created those projects. Software like ps or gimp takes the text and rastarizes it, it basically turns it into pixels like any other in your image. Your best bet is to find out what the fonts were called, then look on some font websites like dafont.com to see if you can download them. A lot of fonts are freeware, but some are not, so you might get lucky, then again, you might scrap a whole project due to font issues. It's not the first time this has happened to someone.

Moko and Wallace reply are correct but i believe don't answer to the real question :" if the PS text layer are editable in gimp and if may be retrieved information on the font used

Alas NO , NOT AT ALL

Not only gimp can't edit PSD text layer, but can't even open PSD with text layer :
there are 2 commune causes of failure in opening PSD files, the first are text layer , the second some layer in unsupported layer mode (there are a few modes only available in gimp , others only in PS) THAT WAS THE PAST but now are solved

I didn't know of the new parser (see message below) no more problem to open PSD with text layer,
still the text information get lost BUT ...

BUT the image of the text is usually sufficient for WhattheFont (a free online service http://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/ ) to identify the font used...



But you may try Chasys-draw , is a free program that support both PSD and XCF (the gimp format) MAYBE will handle better the text layers

Sorry about being boring, but no, it does open PSD with text layers. It just doesn't let you edit text layers for now. If you have examples where GIMP refuses to open PSD files that have text layers, please submit them to bugzilla.

We have an improved parser for PSD files (GSoC2013 project) which knows about text layers, but GIMP doesn't yet have an API in place for plugins to handle text data. Patches are welcome

Do you known if also the problems regarding unsupported layer mode were solved ?

Ok guys, so in a nutshell Gimp will NOT be able to actually edit the original text created in Photoshop?
So basically i just have a bunch of typography based .psd's i can't REALLY edit awesome...

You could get a copy of "White Rabbit" and use that to edit your psd's.

Thanks Wallace, but i'm not sure who these sources of 'White Rabbit' are.
I think i'll just download the photoshop trial again for 30 days (since i've done a clean install... ) this will be sufficient time to make those quick changes.



I'm still a Gimp man...

The majority of the designs are actually just using some very basic font's like:
Helvetica Bold & Arial Black.

There are however some more unique designs that came from Whatdafont.

The issue isn't getting the fonts in as much as my concern is will I have the ability to go in and edit the actual text/font as if I were in Photoshop via Gimp? (the answer to this question sounds like a resounding no... already based on a few comments made in the thread...)

not sure if you may do exactly the same thing then if using photoshop, but for sure there are a lot of excellent text effects for gimp, effect of any type , even if the best in my opnion are not build in but available as separate downloads

A good place to search them is http://gimpscripts.com/ , use tags as "Logo" and "Alpha to logo" , many were presented also here, in the script and plugin board of GC
