Is it possible to give me the steps and the settings of what you used to get the image to this standard please? As I am new to all this and as I have been working on this most of the day, I am getting to the stage where I could just leave it. I am like a bull in a china shop with this at the moment...I could have my settings all wrong?? Haha!

I used a layer mask to refine the edge a little. Just painting with a soft brush on the layer-mask to hide some of the rough edges.
If you're not familiar with layer-masks look here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRBXzVzwEoM.
I'm on Windows, and there is a slight difference in the way thing are done.
As for the "clone tool" look here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRF6IIRRZeQ

You could also select just the pot area and using a linear gradient with very similar colors ( black and white) , simply refill the area. Apply the gradient left to right or the exact opposite right to left depending on where you want the darker area to be on the pot.

Another approach-
Select just the light areas one at a time and raise them up just over their original areas and edit>copy> edit>paste to new layer. Now move them over the lit areas and voila! :) Use the curves tool to get exact color shades.

one trick I use with the clone tool is to use a soft-edged brush…which basically makes it similar to the heal tool. I also use the convolve tool to help blend the cloned edges
