I'd suggest curvebending embossing on any cylinder a bit:


Note that for decent results with curvebend, you should scale up 400% then scale back down 25%, as the aliasing is really bad in that plugin.

I believe the bend to path filter and PC's mathmap curve bend filters are much better.
I do use curve bend once in a while though.

That shot glass is cool, i found a few nice stock images at photobucket.com

I'm not familiar with any of those techniques.

where do you find the bend to path filter? I know where curve bend is..

I thought I'd put in something too. I took this photograph of a bottle in near darkness to get the grainy effect (high iso, long exposure). Processes I used were" Text, text to selection, distort selection, chisel filter, noise RGB(to introduce the noise), filter cubism (to give a fleck), use a mix of curve bend and lens distortion filters to bend and diminish the ends of the lettering. It seems each entry has added something to the final outcome.
Consider using the select distort filter for a more realistic raised lettering glass curvature before you bumpmap or chisel and use the lens distort filter to add slight pin cushioning effects, the fisheye filter or use Rob A''s idea.

Same bottle again in daylight, 250 ml embossed, curved and shaped with a combination of map to cylinder, curve bend, i-warp and decor-bevel filter. I used only basic gimp tools (no plugins) . I used blur and smudge to finish the raised lettering as realistic as I could .

Includes another set of add mat and beveled frame plus artistic edges for border.
