Figured I should introduce myself, since I may be a regular poster eventually.

I am Mr-Glaceon, a digital cartoon art hobbyist hailing from deviantART. I enjoying drawing and animation. It is fun sketching cute and silly things, (Sonic characters or chibis.) as well as more serious things such as Mangaka humans, and the occasional semi-realistic sketch of David Tennant.

While I do not plan on pursuing the arts on a full-time basis, (Aiming for something in electronics.) I would eventually like to use my skills for producing original artwork for indie game development. I have some crazy ideas, and I feel blessed being capable of bringing them to life in art form, and that the open source software community has given me the means to make that happen.

It feels good talking in a community of fellow users of GIMP, I am sorely outnumbered on deviantART, and a lot of my friends' impressions of it (From older versions no less.) are less than flattering; it still surprises people when they say I draw my art with GIMP. I look forward to meeting all of you!

Welcome to Gimp Chat. There is a video on youtube of a professional character concept artist called Xia Taptara who has a website called idrawgirls.com and who ususally uses Photoshop. On this video he is trying out an earlier version of Gimp and although he finds the interface a little difficult, he twice describes Gimp as Awesome and says it can be used as a professional tool. I'll see if I can get the link for you.

Edit: here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-U6nDff12Y

That was an interesting video! Another artist friend of mine also starts her paintings in gray-scale, it's a great method. I really want to paint digitally alongside cartoon artwork as well, it's fun from when I tried it with my mouse.

I've also heard GIMP is great for professional web graphics, and seeing as I'd love to work on web comics eventually, GIMP has everything I need to do that.

I usually start in greyscale too, that way you can concentrate on getting the values and value balance right before adding colour. It's a good idea not to go the whole way in greyscale though otherwise you will have to paint your painting twice - once in greyscale and once in colour. I usually get it done roughly in greyscale, add colour on overlay layers, then sample the colours and refine the painting.

Sprinkles is really cute!

Thanks, I enjoy practicing with her a lot. :) And that's a great point, it would be redundant to do everything in grayscale before coloring; everything in balance. I'll keep that in mind while I paint a knight OC for a cousin!
