I need to compress a big file - Can some1 help me?

I have 2 problems!

1: I'm trying to compress a 230MB file in to a much smaller file but pea-zip's options don't work to compress it in to 5MB or 10MB like the options say, it just says filename.zip.001 then I get a bunch of unopenable files with the same name only with .002 - .003- etc! I need to make this file A LOT smaller.

2: I had a virus of which I have removed from the machine but now when I try to send my file to anybody it says it has a virus! I re-exported just to be safe and still I'm told it has malicious code in it, how could that happen if I have no viruses on the machine??

I'm not familiar with pea-zip but I suspect it is compressing your 230Mb file down to about a 40Mb (pretty much as good as compression gets for text files) and then splitting that up into multiple files that are no larger than the size you specify.

If you open the first file (filename.zip.0001) using pea-zip then the other files (.0002, .0003, ...) should be recognized as being part of the same zip archive.

You could try out "7-zip"... http://7-zip.org/download.html
7-zip is good at compressing files and has lots of other options for extracting many different compressed file types.
Don't know anything about why your files are being flagged as containing viruses. This could have something to do with the "anti-virus" software that is installed on the recipients machine. Or your own installed "anti-virus" software.

I use 7-zip.
I just compressed my whole .gimp-2.8 folder and this is the result (without any particular setup): from 2.6 GB to 0.9 GB.
Is it enough for you?

It didn't do that, it just made a bunch of odd unopenable files and another files that I think wanted a password that I never gave it.

For most graphics / video / applications do not expect much compression. Usually they are already compressed.
Documents compress well and there is a saving in 'slack' space for lots of little files.

You might get 80% of original

Peazip: do not confuse the archiving method with the archive size.

Green box - The 5 -10 - 25 MB are a chunk size for a spanned archive. Make it easier to send. Peazip will re-combine at the other end. What you need is probably Single Volume.

Red box - The compression algorithm - 7Z (7zip) is supposed to be the best, as good as RAR which is proprietary.

Blue box - The amount of compression. You can use Ultra but generally the difference between that and normal is not that great. It does take a lot more time to pack/unpack however.

Final note You can make a self-extracting archive. Even in linux it makes a pesky .exe file

Unlikely to get past a virus scanner. Virus scanners can see inside zip's and probably 7zip as well.

I must be doing something very wrong because "compressing" makes it bigger....... :hoh

7zip is also making it bigger it's basically doing nothing! T.T

It's an exe file for a game I'm working on, not an installer you just open it and it works.
Why it's so huge I don't know for sure, I'll assume that in exporting it doesn't compress anything like sounds, music and images. :S

Well I figured out why it's THAT big, the ending animation is huge because I made it HD. :S
Still, without it a previous unfinished export was rather big. :\

Edit:
I'm trying to make the video smaller, I realized I used a wav version of an MP3 song and there was a typo about the music origin so lets see if this makes it smaller...but still I'll wanna compress it. D:

If you compress an already compressed file there's a good chance the size won't be reduced any further, and the new file can actually be larger if it does no compression but adds the necessary headers.

Does everything need to be in one file? You can have the exe load necessary resources. Of course, if your main concern is download size, you'll need to trim the resources.

You can start by checking the bitrate on the MP3 files, if you haven't already. Can you use indexed palettes for the images? (This may only be a concern for the images in the ending animation). Make sure you don't have any unused resources, such as old sound effects and such.

(there might be alternative means to whatever end you seek)
2. What is saying it has a virus?

To compress an exe file, UPX http://upx.sourceforge.net/ is probably a better tool.
Unfortunately, antivirus programs may claim that any compressed exe contains malware.

I would never expect to compress any executable file to such a tiny percentage of its original size. You might reduce it by 10%, but not to 10%.

I used to split files to store on floppies, because they were all I had. :gaah

It's uncanny how huge it is and for a small program it shouldn't be so big.

How much stuff goes into it? Games do tend toward bigness. The only one I play (besides Solitaire lol) takes up somethingteen GB. Maybe you should be happy yours is so small.

Lots of small images, plus a few .wmv and some music.
Lets see if that other thing can work...
