Ok. I can buy that.

He's kind of a chubby ferret though.

Wilber is a GIMP. Not supposed to be a known animal. Look under "Publicity", the 3rd paragraph: http://www.gimp.org/about/ancient_history.html

Maybe he's a crab, haha.

A "crab"!? :hehe
Most of the references I could find. Say that Wilber resembles a coyote. I also found the same Wilber reference as describe above, which claims that Wilber is a "GIMP". I couldn't find any references about what a "GIMP" might be that made any sense to me.

Come to think of it, a coyote mascot named Wilber for Gimp. Makes just as mush sense as a penguin named Tux does for Linux.

I also found this...

A "GIMP" doesn't have to be anything, that's the point. That said, I did come across conflicting answers. It seems that GIMP.org would be a fairly reliable resource though. Perhaps not. What would I know, I'm just an amateur GIMPer.

Look like maybe he is a coyote. Well that works too if the original authors of Gimp named Wilbur after one

I've put those up on my site (hope you don't mind). Wilber-ferret is my favorite Wilber.

Yeah I know. :hehe
I used a "Bing search" instead of Google.
I guess that Wilber could be whatever anyone would like to imagine. You're "Wilber-Ferret" certainly illustrates this fact.
I've seen you're Wilber-Ferret before, on one of the GC banners. I wasn't sure what it was, now I know. You've done a really great job with it's creation.
I've always thought that Wilber was some kind of dog, but I think it's open to interpretation and ones imagination.

Thank you Molly, you're very generous. I got from you some of them and I keep them in a fold as I love them in little brushes. I'm sure I'll use them in any composition. Currently I'm empty of ideas and I love doing what all of you create, at least I try it. :tyspin ;)
