I've given ubuntu a few weeks to test it and I think I like mint better. I just like the way it feels and it seems to me that it has a lot more software choices to install. There are some other little things that helped me decide. I have almost 360 scripts in my gimp scripts folder and a lot of brushes, patterns etc in Windows. In ubuntu I couldn't copy them to the Linux gimp but with mint i can do it easily. I still ca't find a proper printer driver in either build but I can keep looking.

Incidentally, I know it doesn't matter to anyone but I'm sorry I haven't had time to be here much over the last week or two but I do have good reasons. My wife was sick and that took a lot of my time, and my youngest daughter was having some issues that had to be addressed and we're taking the training to be counselors for parenting classes at the local pregnancy resource center in addition to the child care we do. All of that has required most of my time. I am glad I got to the point where I can get back. lately my only social interaction comes from this forum.

you should have no any problem to copy your script folder in Ubuntu
Ubuntu is not differentwhat may be different are the security option settings.
so ubuntu may require you sudo to mount the windows drive and mint not but that is customizable

If you did that there is a good chance that you didn't copy them to the right place. The trap many new Gimp-on-Linux users fall into is that the Gimp profile, in ~/.gimp-2.6, starts with a dot and so doesn't show in file managers by default, leading people to search elsewhere and finding things in /usr/share. But things in /usr/share could be wiped out by a reinstall, and won't be very often backed up.

should be exactly the same for mint.

About hidden files are a problem in windows exactly as on linux

i changed visualization options in linux as on windows,
i may understand "protected" files but i hate hidden files...files may be hidden to hosts without admin status but never to me on my own computer

I'm a Mint user myself (since v8), and I agree. When the dev team put it together they included a lot of things in the default setup that are "extra" in Ubuntu.

What printer do you have?

On Unix systems, files aren't really hidden, they are removed from your view to reduce clutter. Your home directory is full of files and directories where Gimp and others store their stuff (I've got 58 such files & directories) that you don't want to see most of the time.

A Canon MP190, i can use the driver for MP180 and print but it won't scan. I found a driver for MP190 but couldn't get it to work. It isn't a major big deal because I have an extra printer I can use. My extra printer is a little one I keep in My laptop bag it's also a Canon IP90. I guess the worst part is that I don't like having problems and not finding the answers.

Did you try here? The page is for the Canon Pixma 190, and there is Linux in the OS dropdown box. If you select that, then English in the language box and click the submit button, you are presented with two possibilities, one of which is for Debian Linux. Try it, unless you already have. In that case, feel free to ignore me...

Yes, that was the one I tried but I'll try it again now that I'm using mint. I had trouble installing things unless i used the software manager and maybe that was my problem before. This is incidentally my very first post in a forum (or anywhere else) using something other than Windows. My windows computer is sitting there turned off, strange feeling. It's a very liberating feeling.

I love using Mint. I switched completely to Mint last year with the release of Isadora, and am still using that version. I haven't had any issues with it and wouldn't go back to Windows either. For my printers I use HPLIP and that recognizes my HP and Samsung printers.

You may want to look in the repositories for the package gdebi, which makes it much much easier to install .deb packages. As I recall, it can be launched through Firefox, right-click menu in a directory or from the command-line terminal. It's in two parts: gdebi and gdebi-core and I believe selecting one part will notify you it needs the other.

Also, try installing the libcupsys package as mentioned in the Ubuntu Forums post (if you haven't already done so).

I'll try that, Bob, thanks. I can't understand why everything in Linux has to be such a pain in the butt. If I ask in a linux forum people treat me like I'm either stupid or a noob. That makes me mad because I'm neither. I've been working with computers for over 30 years. I remember back to the days of Kaypro and Altos machines. I've worked with almost every brand of computer out there and every OS that came down the line. I can figure out almost anything but I just can't understand why Linux makes such a major production out of little things.

I think part of it is a sort of snobbery that has unfortunately descended on the Linux community in general - at least as regarding helpfulness. Windows users always seemed to act superior to the DOS users too, as I recall. Even within the Ubuntu community, Mint users sometimes catch static from Ubuntu purists, even though it's the same basic OS with another level of niceness added on.

I was just reading yesterday about hurt feelings between Ubuntu and Debian. It just never ends.

As for printing from Gimp:
I don't see any mention of "gutenprint".
When installed as a Gimp plugin you'll get the option "Print with gutenprint.."
in the File dropdown menu.
I have an Epson printer and it allows me to print on odd sized paper.
The colors have extensive controls to adjust.

Experience tells me otherwise, but I wasn't specifically talking about mint forums, I've never posted in a mint forum yet. I was talking about the software and the mindset behind why they make it complicated when it doesn't have to be that way.

Printing in Gimp is not an issue. I VERY rarely print from Gimp but if i need to I can easily do that, the MP190 driver will print fine, it just won't scan.

Yes, it's really sad, Bob. It seems like we always have to have the "us vs them" attitude in everything. It invades forums and anywhere there is a group of people who think the same way about anything.

Update: I tried the MP180 driver and it works fine in Mint so that issue is solved. Now i have to figure out how to install things not included in the software manager.
