Hello from Indiana, USA. I am new to this and am looking for all the help I can get so I can use gimp to make grayscale images to use with my cnc machine. The software for the machine see s white as the highest points and the black as the deeper cuts. Been playing around with it but not there yet, so any points in the right direction appreciated.

Welcome to Gimp Chat capstar.

FYI, Default Image Preferences and Image Grid can be set to millimetres for CNC.

Here is caduceus symbol, ideally would like for the snakes to have rounded appearance and the top of the scepter rounded like a ball, wings to have a feather or some depth. I have taken some things and used emboss but that is not giving me the effects I am looking for. There are companies out there selling imagery for carving such as the moonface, however I know that there has to be a way to make these kind of images myself and not end up paying the high prices they want for them, and I don't want to be limited by pre-made designs.

Welcome, as Esper mentioned Pegleg44 is the expert on here for this kind of stuff, but do try searching for height map and depth map.

Thanks everyone for the welcome and the help. I have been getting some decent results for the grayscales for carving, however some of the ones I had purchased (expensive) from one company are just so clean. When enlarged all the way to 800% all the image is still super clean and smooth, no pixels showing and I would like to get at least somewhere close to that point.
