i was trying the tutorial and wondering if it could be simplified, because a lot of steps did not make much sense to me
for example bevelling and then bumpmapping...thats basically doing the same thing twice

tbh, what i did, does not have much to do with what the tutorial is trying to achieve (crystal text)

i just typed text in a 50ies gray (thats 808080)
alpha selected the text, shrank and cut, to get the frame
then bevelled the text with the option to merge down ticked
then chrome curves (this is the key of the whole effect)
applied anisotropic smoothing (G'MIC)
and finally colorize
