WOW! Thanks so much for your rapid response and detailed information. Your work is most through and interesting, however I might not have presented my actual intent with my original request. I have a simple line drawing of a medallion, a cameo of a small boy that I would like to make appear as if it is metallic, like a coin or medal. I guess you might say I wish to make an inanimate object (picture), appear as if it has depth and weight and is tangible. Is that possible in GIMP? Rather than a background or metallized gradient full screen, a small object, a drawing maybe placed on an attractive background or displayed alone, suspended with a slight shadow underneath... ;)

you can find a tutorial for this effect here:

Are you trying to make an embossed effect?

Filters>Map>Bump map works best for that. :bigthup

Gee, that is different., what happens when you turn off one layer. Graechan probably knows, isn't it his script?.

Cool. Thanks.

I do have another problem (he said sheepishly.) I check the box to keep the layers but it doesn't do anything.

Anyone had a chance to look at this?

I would like to be able to keep the layers.

I could only keep the frame layer and vignette separate from the antique metal text because it used gmic for a lot of the text creation
