jpg vs jpeg

GIMP Version: 2.8.10
Operating System: Linux
GIMP Experience: Intermediate Level

List any ERROR messages you received:
xxx.jpeg : unsupported file format

Just wondering if there is an easy way to make gimp recognize jpeg files. I thought that it used to open them fine, but now I get an error msg. Just renaming the extension from jpeg to jpg works fine. I figured gimp would look at the actual header of the file instead of the extension.

i use 2.8.10 as well and it seems to open .jpeg fine. Maybe Linux is weird. I use windows.

No such problem on my Linux, jpg, jpeg and JPG all open fine. What message do you get exactly?

Looks like I'm not alone. This seems to be the same thing.

Could you packing one of those problematic files (to zip or tar.gz) and share it here?

I renamed one jpg file to jpeg and it opens fine in GIMP 2.8.10, Kubuntu Linux.

My doubt is if the problem is with GIMP or it is a problem related with your Linux distribution and the file association. That error message you got with GIMP, or by double clicking on the file in file browser?

Well it is literally Any jpg file. If I name any file .jpeg, it won't open. Changing it to .jpg lets it work fine.

I did a compare and the only difference was the path since I built mine in my home folder. I guess this is going to be hard to track down. I'm suppose something went wrong when I compiled it eons ago and will probably just need to live with it until I get around to compiling it again. Just seems like a strange error which made me think it might be able to trace.

Interresting, now I also know where some of the configuration files for gimp is. Loadure of jpg/jpeg for gimp 2.6 (gegl 0.0.2, glib 2.23, gtk+ 2.24.10, pango 1.30.0, fontconfig 2.80) shows now problems. Adjusting the config file only removes file from recognized types for open dialog, but does not inhibit loading .jpeg .

Well I saved a .jpg file as .tiff, .tif, and .jpe. The only one it won't open is the .tiff. I have a feeling this is down to the number of characters in the extension and it never gets to reading the magic of the file if it's over 3 characters.

Doesn't look like a matter of installed plugins, since the same plugin is used for JPEG/JPG.

And looking at the source code, for unknown extensions Gimp tries to find if the magic number in the file matches any file plugin. I also don't see any limit to the length of extensions...

I searched the source for the error message to try and trace backwards and it only appears for psd files.
psd-load.c and the associated po files. I guess it's a mystery.
