I just remembered another tut I saw that also uses a motion blur to achieve the 3d or extruded effect. Check it out.

You should try Sauls script Draconian.

download/file.php?id=296

Download it and place it in your scripts folder.Then go to Filters/Script-Fu/Refresh Scripts OR just restart Gimp.

Nice indeed!
There's a limitation though, the script will only look good with 1 point perspective, if you deviate from this then the perspective will feel off.
