As a society from a distance solar system from a galaxy far far away try to save there civilization by harnessing as much energy from their red-shifted star, they had to abandon their effort since their "sun" became too unstable.

I actually have an astronomer colleague who (mostly for fun) runs a side-research project looking at other galaxies to see if there is an excess of infrared light (the hypothesized effect of multiple stars being surrounded by Dyson spheres). If so this could be an indication of a growing Kardashev type III civilization. So far I believe the result is just an upper limit - if such a civilization exists, less than 0.7% of the galaxies could even possibly have one. So not a really decisive result but fun that anyone checks it out.
