Paper type is important for sure, original inks, rather than refills as well.
I found the way the two react makes a big difference.
Trial and error unless you befriend an expert.

use Gradient 02-Nature Flower
set shape Radial
can you see the effect?

I can't believe I never knew about how these work with radial! I always thought they were just blends!!! The only one I ever knew would make something was the eyeballs.

Thank you Marcello. I forgot about this thread yesterday and have only just checked it again. I would hope I could do better if I spent some more time on it. Others here have done wonders. Thanks again for bringing it up. I guess when it was first mentioned (if it was) a few of us wouldn't have known.

A purpose Ive often used gradients for is to create a simple gradual Blur

Normal Blur

Gradual or edge blur
Image
below I used it to blur all but the mermaids head

another gradual blur using Masks and Gradients

Here I've made a bright face come out of the dark using masks and gradients
