So I was looking at this salsa maker because there is so much chopping, when doing it by hand, and ran across a review that made me spew out my iced tea.

Quote:
We use this thing all the time. We saw this crackhead demonstrating this at a swap meet once. He made lightning fast salsa and it tasted amazing. We had to buy it because the whole thing was hilarious. We take slightly longer because we're not hopped up on crack

:rofl

I've heard of the Soft Sell/Hard Sell, but this is the first time I've heard of this type of approach to selling something. :hehe

GnuTux, did you order the salsa maker? Is it all it's "cracked" up to be?

Well I ordered one. Fresh salsa is one of my favorite things and it's a mess to make. It came yesterday afternoon, so this morning I went to the grocery and bought the ingredients. The cilantro was kind of droopy so I rinsed the bunch off well, trimmed of the stem ends a bit and plunked it in a mug of water to perk it up.

Interestingly, it has an egg separator on it but no instructions about what to do with it. I expect you can strain some egg whites into the bowl and whip them up for meringues, souffles, etc. Dunno. That's another "trip" to make.

This is the recipe that came with it. You can also add two avocados if you want guacamole.
Fresh Salsa Recipe

2 medium ripe tomatoes, quartered
1/4 medium sized onion
4 sprigs cilantro
2 cloves garlic
1 tsp garlic salt
2 tbsp lemon juice
1 jalapeño (1/3 for mild, 2/3 for medium, whole for hot and spicy)

Place all ingredients in salsa master bowl and turn handle to desired consistency.
Quick spins make finer cuts

I'll post the results and what I think of it.

That's cool. Let me know what you think.

You might want to read more of those reviews to get some tips. They were saying that you have be gentle with tomatoes because it doesn't take much to turn them into puree. Just a few turns of the handle should do it. They also said that the handle was kind of flimsy and really not necessary. Some of the reviewers were saying that they didn't use the handle when they turned it. It appears most of them were adding the tomatoes last.

Anyway. It will be good to hear a review from someone I trust. :hehe

Well I just finished chopping a batch. I put the tomatoes in the bottom but they chopped ok. I don't know how they turned the blades without the handle. It has a knob on it to hold onto. Anyway I dumped everything in and the first few turns were kind of hard, but then it smoothed out and I have a bowl of salsa. I chopped the onion beforehand so I could have some fresh chopped onion on hand. I have an Alligator for chopping it so it was fast work. Alligator Chopper

I also diced up the jalapeño with it. Snipped the cilantro directly into the bowl with kitchen shears. I didn't have garlic salt but have garlic powder and I sprinkled in a bit of salt. Since the chips are salty, go easy on salt in the salsa.

It smells heavenly. I'm going to leave it sit in the fridge for a couple hours to kind of mingle the flavors. It looks like enough for 2 or 3 people, depending on how much they like salsa.

Anyway, it looks like a good job of what it's supposed to do.
