I really wanted to make an Inkscape tutorial based on this vector graphics tutorial
but because the gradient tool in Inkscape sucks gives me a headache I had to switch to Illustrator.
However, all the raster effects used in this tutorial were made in GIMP :geek

I liked the overall look when i saw this tut for the first time and decided to make an Inkscape tutorial.
It's doable but butthurting for IS's gradient tool clumsiness and 32-bit Inkscape 0.48 kept crashing on me.
It went better with 64-bit Inkscape v0.91 but only on the part of crashing. Grad.tool is still the same.

Awesome result K1Te; don't want to have to do this manually, so there's gotta be a way to create selective island mask to tell the stitch either on (white) or off (red).

Thanks for the comments everyone!
We are having warm weather here in Central Ohio for the last 5 or 6 days - around 80 degrees (27C)
so the cool temperatures wasn't on my mind at all but i'm glad if it made someone feel warmer

@Lyle there are two techniques in vector editor to avoid tedious manual placement of the knits.
One is a clipping mask, the other is a "place instead" function. I made a block of beige knits on top,
selected with freehand tool and deleted knits outside the map shapes and text. Took about 10 min.
