I have been trying to figure out how to take a regular photo of someone and making it into a carved pumpkin. Not sure where to even begin.

Do you mean that you want to carve out the face (regular photo of someone) into the pumpkin, to make a jack-o-lantern?

yes, I was thinking of how I could turn a pic into a stencil or line art and then use that to make a jack o lantern that looked like the person...using gimp, haha, not really carving!

How do you get the carved look? Not a tutorial, just in general. I have to figure out how to make a 'stencil' thing so I can cut out what shows through from the inside, but not sure how to get it to look like it's a thick pumpkin rind.

Mask part is easy; the right part is created by making a difference mask using motion blur (at least that's how I did it).

Well, this was the best I could whip up in such a short time. Next year I will learn how to make it look carved.
