Graechan, all those are not PATTERNS but PATTERN TYPES, which are used by the script to perform sometimes different actions.
Once replaced the default wood-1.jpg with Pine, there is no other dependency on patterns: you may use whichever you have and like.

Odin,
thanks for your careful testing.
Script updated on post 1

this is the outcome using only defaults (removed from my gimp all my textures and the engrave.scm script)

the Pine is not as good as our provided patterns to use, but at least avoids errors...

Odin,
I will converte all the provided textures into .pat patterns, as you suggested
but in this case, with no hurry....it's only to be consistent with gimp philosophy
thanks for the suggestion

Have a look at XnConvert.
1. [Input] Add folder(s)
2. [Action] Add action> Image> Resize (optional)
3. [Output] Source folder | Format: PAT - Gimp Pattern
One go, all folders, output all in place.
Quick and easy. :bigthup

Thank you so much oldmangrumpy, graechan and dinasset. Happy you like the outcomes.
Sallyanne, cobblestone textures are fantastic to apply with this Dinasset's script.

Odin thanks!
I didn't know this capability of XnCOnvert.
I ran it and everything went OK, but because the resulting files are much bigger than the originals, I will not post as attachments here, and I invite all those who like to adhere to gimp philosophy to use XnView themselves.
Anyhow, good finding!

thanks SallyAnne for testing my script.
I (we) hope you will enjoy experimenting many different combinations...

No Errors. :bigthup

I'm not sure why the 'undo' error went away (after adding wood-1.jpg) but everything seems to work error free for me now.

** I suggest using *.pat file format for all supporting patterns/textures.

Odin,
to answer your question about the "error" I reset again an inexistent pattern as default and made tests coming out with this observation:
1-if I do nothing I get also the second error ("inconsistent...") like you got before
2-if I change and select one of the existing patterns there is no additional error after the initial one I get because the default pattern doesn't exist
3-if I do not change the pattern but uncheck "add pattern" choice on the parameters window there is no additional error after the initial one I get because the default pattern doesn't exist

Hence my evaluation:
- because the script opens the pattern and rescales it (if the "add pattern" choice is not unchecked) Gimp considers the "impossible steps" as good reason to terminate with that error about inconsistency

Thank You Dinasset and Isabella for testing. Altogether a great bit of work! I looked at the lot. For me the best were Geisha_1 metal Gold , Chloe Moretz-Silver and Profeta -metal gold. Thank You

post addressed specifically to Odinbc

Odin, are you using XnView conversion to .pat regularly?
If so, I ask you a couple of questions (I'm a novice, I used it today only twice):
- does it happen also to you that the converted .jpg to .pat looses its internal name? I mean: after conversion the converted file has externally the same name but when shown in the gimp patterns window it assumes a generic name like pattern#1....
- does it happen also to you that the converted .jpg to .pat looses its colours? my converted .pat are all shown gray
Should this happen also to you we may address a request to XnView developers to check whether an enhancement is possible.
Thanks

thanks for the comments, but...
we prepared the script to let all and each of you gimp-chatters to use it and experimenting; so, we are waiting upon your outcomes, our were only examples (even if very good examples, thanks to Issabella...)

@ dinasset,
This my seem silly, but I'm a bit confused about all the attachments you offer in this thread. I'm not sure if I should download every attached file or only some? :puzzled
Any guidance that you can give would be greatly appreciated.

@ Wallace
after the script has been updated by including the logic of engrave.scm (thanks to Graechan) and by setting the default pattern to "Pine" (standard in Gimp), you ONLY need to download/install the script from post #1
at that point you can
- try using defaults : output will be your image woodcarved using Pine pattern
(not particularly nice, IMO)
Then, if you like to experiment with the best patterns for the script, you can download/install all the patterns attached, i.e
a) Texture used.7z (post #5) which only has the patterns shown in the first ten examples
b) all the textures attached zipped in post #14 and #15
The other attachments are examples, you do not need to download them

Enjoy

I have not used the jpg to pat conversion with xnconvert much so I'm not an expert.
From my experience when .jpg is converted to .pat there is no internal name to convert, the metadata is not equivalent. The only control is file name with metadata selected.
Your .jpg files I've converted to .pat have not lost color when used in Gimp, only visually in the patterns folder.
I can live with the internal name issue but I would like to have not only resize but, make seamless in one go.
