Occasional Ding Sound

Recently I've been hearing a "Bell" sound when working with selections. This mainly happens when I'm shrinking or growing a selection, but this "Bell" sound doesn't happen every time and I've also found it difficult to recreate.
It doesn't seem to affect anything that I've noticed, it's just a bit odd to me.
What is this and why might this be occurring?

EDIT
I looked through my system sounds and found that this "Bell" sound I'm hearing is the Windows default beep. This still doesn't shed any light on why I'm occasionally hearing this beep when working with selections, as described above.

That's really strange. AFAIK, there are no sounds in GIMP. It's been a long time since I've had Windows but I remember being able to go into an area to attach sounds to certain occurrences. You may want to see if you can find that and look where the ding.wav file is assigned.

I did go through the prefs in GIMP and there is one place that had MIDI files mentioned. See image. Perhaps the midi controller got moved over to the right on your machine?

Only other thing I can think of is a tinfoil hat.

It's windows making the beeping sound, but I can't figure out why it's doing it.
I do like the idea of a tinfoil hat, but I don't think that will stop windows from playing that stupid beep whenever it thinks it's appropriate.
BTW... I would have to first find some Marsala Colored tinfoil, before I think of making that hat. :hehe

GIMP's color picker says that Marsala is color # 955251

Well... golly gee willikers, look at that.

Typing Marsala into the HTML notation box comes up with nothing.

I seriously doubt that marsala will come up in HTML notation. I'm sure it has a number but I'm not totally sure gimp's color picker is exactly right.

Marsala as a color has probably existed a long time, someone simply had to come along and give it a name.

I guess I would just have to type in Brown and find it myself, if I didn't have the html code.

This still doesn't explain why windows thinks it needs to sound off while I'm working with selections. :puzzled

I did a Gooogle search: what causes Windows ding.wav to play?

There were some interesting answers that I didn't understand but you may want to check it out.

If you go to Control Panel -> Sound -> Sounds, you can see where the sounds are assigned. One of the assignments is being triggered by the action...who knows what. Or something else is going on in the background and you've only noticed it when you're in the foreground...

Like for example, if you're using a script that pops up a menu, there's a "Menu Pop-up" assignment it might be triggering. I don't have a sound assigned to that though.

I checked this on my Win 7 machine, but it looks the way I remember it looking on my other machines pretty much.

Yeah, I searched it out too, but didn't come up with any definitive answer.

As you can see it doesn't say what this sound is for, except for

My System Sounds don't really show what the sound it assigned to.

There's nothing on this list that has the Windows Default Ding assigned to it that I could find.

When I find that this "Ding" sound is being heard while I'm Gimping, I'm going to record what I'm doing when it happens, just to show you guys that I'm not going bonkers.

What I do when I hear those sounds I bend over a bit, shake my head sideways like I have something in my ear, stamp my foot then it is gone.

Windows will play dings when you do things like page_up if you're already at the top of a document. It's windows way of warning you that you're doing something that doesn't really need to be done. I wonder if something like that is occurring here?

Could be?
All I'm doing when I hear this "Ding" is calling up Shrink/Grow Selection and setting the number to grow or shrink and when I click OK, I hear this "Ding" sound, but not each and every time.

Maybe I should try out Molly's suggestion or perhaps the Hokey Pokey, what do you think Tux?

Well, Wallace, now it's happening to me in Linux. My sound isn't a ding, though. It's more like a clunk sound.

It happens when I make a selection, go to Select/Grow and when I click the OK button it goes "clunk." It also happens when I try to type numbers on the number pad and the numlock key is not on.

I'll try to track down the .wav file, not totally sure where to look.

Okay, now that I know y'all are crazy, I will join the party. I have been hearing music since mid summer. I was blaming it on the fan in the sun-room but I also hear it when I am in the car.
I hear America The Beautiful and I actually sing along with it cuz it is such a beautiful song, especially by Lee Greenwood. Anyway, I am not kidding. BTW, I never mention it cuz people will commit me to heaven knows where.

Some possible Linux locations, probably *.ogg files.

You'll need root.

Thanks Odin. I did go in there and tried all the sounds. Couldn't find the "clunk."

There are ogg and also some wav files.
