Works great; viewed a few Youtube videos, but haven't set up Hulu+ yet since I'm not sure I want to spend $10/month for the service yet. The quality is excellent; pretty impressed. Using direct wired input since I don't trust wireless (turned off all my wireless inputs from my Cable model (or I should say AT&T modem). I do have a lot to learn about the device and will do so over the next few days/weeks. Just hope that my credit card doesn't get charged for things I didn't want to be charged for. When my AT&T contract is up, I'm probably going to hose my cable and exclusively use Roku for my TV; haven't decided yet. Anybody here hosed their cable and only using streaming access? Just curious.

I have no idea what this device is or what it does. This is the first time I've heard of it.

@Lyle, the majority of people are now buying smart TV's and they do their streaming through there, plus everything else.

Yeah; I'm behind the times. Though I have a LED LCD TV (Samsung) it doesn't have wireless ability or streaming capability (good TV though). My brother uses his Wii for streaming. Still, I have a lot to learn (had some initial fun with it, but did finally turn the thing off via unplugging it since I'm not in the mood to play with it further yet; wish it had a power button).

I use my Wii also. I have Amazon Prime Video which comes free with Amazon Prime cost is 76.00 per year , Netflix (8.95 per month) and from my experience all of the streaming movie and tv companies actually have the same content. Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video stream the same stuff.
Mostly i use Netflix as they seem to add more content regularly. I use Amazon Prime for free 2 day delivery on packages. Wii works really well for streaming movies. I do still have cable as that is provided with my internet and phone service all three for 123.00 per month. I do not have the HBO, Cinemax type channels though. Most of those play really old stuff now anyways.

Indeed, my brother still has cable too, so, I might keep the basic HD cable. Still, it's ridiculously expense and I really only watch a handful of channels and wish I could just rent those channels the pay for the whole kit and caboodle of 99% useless ones. I might do both Amazon Prime and Netflix too Rod, but I was thinking that Hulu would be the one that streams more current content (but, before I did lose my job, most of the folk that stream say they were using Netflix). Still, paying all that extra is not what I want to do. Ideally, I would rid my cable all together and pay Amazon Prime and Netflix, but then again, will I still be able to watch current news channels realtime?

Bit late to the discussion here, but thought I'd add that I've dropped cable once I got my Rokus.

As you said, it makes little sense to me to pay an outrageous price for just a few channels I actually watch and a whole bunch I don't. I do still watch some over-the-air television, but I would say that I probably watch 75-80% via Roku and only 20-25% via regular channels.

My parents are elderly and it's become difficult for my mother to walk much (combination of palsy and vision problems brought on by a mini-stroke), so I bought them a Roku for Christmas, too. They plan on using it for streaming movies since it's so difficult for them to get to theaters now. Cable comes as an automatic part of their apartment in their retirement community, so they'll have cable whether they really want it or not. But I'm hearing from them that they are mostly watching over-the-air programming, or streaming on Roku.

I, personally, see no point in having cable if you have a Roku. You could subscribe to Amazon Prime, HuluPlus, Acorn, Vudu and NetFlicks, and still not pay as much as the average "basic" cable bill.

You mentioned being concerned about your credit card being charged. I have both of mine, and my parents, set up so that you must enter your PIN in order to buy anything. I LOVE that option in the set-up as it means I can add channels and flip around doing whatever I want to do. If I bump into a screen asking me for my PIN, then I know that's about to cost me money, and I can then decide whether I really want to do it or not.

Glad you brought back this topic Jaylah; was going to post this here (did so elsewhere) but forgot. I just purchased Amazon Prime yesterday (they had a $72/year one day only situation yesterday). Blown away compared to the free stuff available with Roku alone (but even those programs from You-tube aren't bad). Did watch a very disturbing movie with Prime yesterday (called Pi). I was going to stop the movie, but it got so strange that it kept me watching it. lolol

Anyway, the only thing I'm going to miss is the News (not local of course; can get that over the air; national news). There's services like Slingshot that intrigue me too since they are offering real-time streaming content for a relatively decent price (compared to the outrageous price of cable that is). Still, I'm pretty sure I'm going to drop my cable unless they give me a huge discount to keep basic only. Might even drop my phone service (have a cell phone so why keep a land line). We shall see about the phone.

We dumped our land line years ago and don't miss it at all, so far anyway.

What is a ROKU?????

It's a device that will allow you to stream videos to your TV via the internet akky. I actually have a Roku 3 (which allows me to also watch youtube videos). My sister got it for me for Christmas. I like it because it also has a direct ethernet connection (don't do wireless and have disabled all wireless devices in my home; call me paranoid. lol).
