suppose you have 1 image
the image fill the very center of a grid of 9 identical rectangles, but the 8 rectangles around are at the moment just blanck and must be filled

To fill you must mirror the image, in the different directions
You may start with left ,right ,top and down...that will fill well 4 of the 8 rectangles at the periphery

The riddle is how to mirror along the diagonals ?
Note that the 4 along the diagonals should merge well not only with the image at the center but also with the other 4 at the perifery...

FIRST STEP

to fill at left and right create 2 dup and mirror both horizontally
to fill above and below create 2 dup and mirror both vertically



Once done that the solution come easily

Uhm... is this some sort of Scripting thing... I have a feeling about that, but anyways, Picture to explain better... as I really can't visualize these type of things, and I think it would help others too.

Not exactly understanding what you are trying to do PC; picture may be worth a 1000 words here. When I want to make a diagonal seamless texture (the source has to be both square (not rectangle) and seamless) is to use Simple's Diamond filter. Yes, the sample is seamless.

OKAY ...soon back with a visual example

Looks like a dither blend with squares instead of dots and only applied selectively. Don't know of a way to automate this one PC. Either masking or erase throughs for a result like this one.

He is gonna do something with that I believe, as he added that and his message implied he would be back with an example and that is probably the original, and it shows no evidence he has edited that post.

That was a random image to be mirrored laterally and diagonally, but i had no time to complete the the example

I wrote soon... but i didn't intend so soon !!

So are you gonna make a script to do this then? Pretty sure, from my understanding of this, you are asking for help making a script to do whatever you are asking for, which is still slightly beyond me

Rectangles with an odd horizontal offset from center have their E/W reversed, those with an odd vertical offset from center have their N/S reversed, in the diagonal you are either identical to center or with both N/S and E/W reversed. And yes on the diagonal you'll be a mirror of you 4 neighbors (symmetry with the sides, you also have symmetry over the corners).

But happened the contrary at soon i tried to make a visual example i solved the riddle, coming to your same solution

anyway a example is good to clear; i chose a totally asimmetric image to explain

now in my mind the second step was clear



less clear ( even if now with a visual example seems easy ) was how fill the rest of the grid, so mirror along the diagonals

If i would have created the image above the soluction would be popped out effortless, too bad i did only in my mind so i was lost

I've seen something similar to this for creating boxes. Maybe it was at sourceforge or the Registry. Will do a quick search to see if I can find this again.

What about Sauls flip and mirror script?
Could it be edited to flip in all different coordinates (x, y, and z)?
I am not thinking Cartesian movement in real space (like a robotic movement) i am referencing N,NE,NW,S,SW,SE,W,E basically.

OK PC; found the term anyway; I know I seen a program or GIMP tut that can do this, but can't find it now. It's orthographic projection. Maybe you can find it and share it with us. Maybe there might even be a mathmap preset to create this type of projection.

That would be sweet for kaleidoscope effects.

I used to have a javascript for orthographic boxes. Hmmmm.... I haven't thought of it in ages. The script basically unfolded a box for pattern making, so you could make your own boxes.

I did this mathmap mirrortile code a while back, will that do? You would have to flip your original (center) image both ways first to get the middle image of the array correct.

I didn't play much with the MM composer but i feel very tempted now with such good ingredient

would be possible edit the script to add a option to increase the layer size instead then mantain the original size (yes i know will be much bigger and could be very risky to use such options on already large image ... )
