Thanks, Isabella. I first lightened and upped contrast a bit, then I used cartoonize, with settings to make the outlines thinner, then I lowered the opacity a bit so the original would show through a bit to give it more details. I then used the cutting tool to make a bigger canvas. The borders are a combo of flood fill on the bottom layer, then the second layer selection is motion blurred outward a bit. The top layer border selection is irregular and feathered out. I wanted the original picture to morph out to the edges in order to give it a less static look. I think I spent more time on the outer part than the main part, lol. You know how one thing leads to another, and another, and another....

@issabella
Those are two sad drivers! They sure hit the brakes too slow! Quite dramatic with the funeral pane directly afterwards too.

@oldmangrumpy
Your late flower is clever Very fitting the theme!
The second one is quite surreal to me - I get the feeling there is a gate over there, closing on a colorful world of opportunity ... that's at least my initial interpretation. :)

@2-ton
He looks like he's in a rush! Nice color and filter work. Is this your own line art or borrowed from an existing comic?

My entry for this week:

Image
(click for DA version)

One should be careful when being out too late in the darkness ...
Who are the figures in the darkness? What is she carrying? What indeed.

Please note that since I'm off on holidays and will have shaky internet, RAP will not be updating again until after summer.

Aww.. This RAP has become such a feature on GimpChat many of us will miss the challenge and seeing the results.
It's only been going for 2 months and has already had nearly 10,000 views, making it one of the most popular on-going topics.

Would you mind if somebody else took over as caretaker while you're on holiday?
I nominate the Gothenburgers (AnMal and Erisian) as joint-caretakers for the duration. :)

Perfect jontait2! AnMal and Erisian will be great caretakers. :clap

griatch: i love the style of that - reminds me of the old fifties and sixties prints (book illustrations and concert posters and the like) that i was attracted to as a child. it's an intriguing picture too, but i don't fear for her safety, i know she's someone who's more than well able to take care of herself.
enjoy your vacation :)!

jontait & issabella: i hate to be contrary, but it think we'd do a rather poor job of that :(. at the best of times we suck at doing anything regularly and when my own vacation comes up in one and a half week) (yep, i'm counting down :) ) we won't know from day to day where we are and what we'll be doing. we're flattered you thought of us though!

@all
If people want to keep the RAP going while I'm away, be my guest. GC's the only place where it's been this successful - it's been quite the abysmal failure on DeviantArt so far (with a glorious one (1) other contributor except myself).

@AnMal
Thanks, some have suggested this to be a "punk" style too. :) It's one of those styles that look simple and random but actually takes quite a bit of work to make grungy enough without just making a mess of everything. It's a lot of fun though. And no you are right - she doesn't look too scared. ;)

@Griatch : I seem to be drawn to anything done in the manner that you have done the one legged girl comics, so I do like the similar look of your 'too late'.
No, I did not do any line art for mine, I took a photo that I have gotten from an acquaintance and used cartoonize on it. I would never be able to do line art as I don't have a tablet and cannot draw at all well with a mouse, and am not very good with the pen tool. It's just simple photo hacking with some of the older/original filters.

*as for Random Art Prompt, perhaps a few extra ones could be sent to someone to dole out and keep us entertained through those vacation months. I really enjoy them, and it gives me the impetus to get some gimping done that I probably would not get around to doing without the prompt.

Starting from April 9, 2016 is:

an abandoned monastery.

Time to pick this up again, it's been too long! Go to the first post in this thread if you wonder what this is about.

Good luck!

I am, for once, early with my entry:

This really started with a doodle based on the prompt, that gradually evolved into this. Took about an hour in total.

Wooo! that's nice!
I like the sketchy feel and the lighting.
Glad you picked this up again.
I'm lousy with buildings so no promises with this one...though maybe I should try....no idea! xD

Thanks! I'm experimenting with flat wide brushes to produce this type of style (there is also a timelapse video now). Allows for pretty fast work, which is nice.

You don't have to make a building you know - you can do whatever you feel inspired to by the prompt after all. Or you could just have a monastery in the background of something else. ;)

Good point, the spirit of the prompt is inspiration more than a literal "translation"!
I haven't "painted/drawn" in GIMP in a while, I should fire it up! xD

Okay! This actually gave me a poem idea so this picture will be spammed a lot, it's going in that topic too, soon.

I went through a lot of concepts in my hear and ended up not really using any of them in their entirety. I'm pretty happy with this even though I know the perspective isn't the best. I recorded the process using a free screen-recorder off of Steam (game platform) so if I can use the files I'll post a speedpaint also.
The concept for the artwork in general is the loneliness of the walls. I want it pretty dark but I also wanted some of the detail to show so the color balance was a pain...what else was a pain? My arm, it's killing me! :lol
I'm not used to painting on the computer anymore I haven't done it in months. D:

Okey, here it is! I hope the lighting is alright, I've never done lighting like this before. And I did try underpainting...it ended up being more of a sketch since I didn't make it look painterly at all. xD
