Done with bog-standard Gimp.

Maybe

Render -> Clouds -> solid noise
then
One of the mapping filters, Colours -> Map this one palette map with a reduced colour palette

Good but looks a bit pixellated. Good guess about Solid Noise, that how I start too. My "secret" is going through curves with a rather specific curve:

And then Color>Map>Gradient Map on the result.

I'd call it more of a "pattern" than a "shape", but that's what Ofnuts posed as a "shape challenge".

It's a shape... Image It's as much a shape as Ofnuts's "oil slick".

Since I threw everything but the kitchen sink at the result, I cannot tell you now ofnuts. lolol

Looks like the clouds method and dreamsmoothing is the better solution. I had though I created something similar to the look a while back, but forgot how I did it. Regardless, kudos to those the re-created ofnut's result. I guess I'm loosing my touch. lol

:)

Like the difference cloud technique along with dreamsmoothing. Did at a lot of kitchen sink stuff to make this not so good seamless texture I call oil based paint. lolol

Looking at it closer, I really need to fix some seams. Oh well; just don't use it as a texture. lol

Thanks Molly. :)
