In Australia laws have been introduced that require ISP's to maintain "metadata" from each internet user and all phone metadata records to be retained for 3 years. This has purportedly been done to stop child pornography and to assist in national security. This data will be available to the five nations that have shared security agreements; USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK.
I really do not have anything to hide, but I object to this severe form of presumption of guilt (just in case). There already was plenty of legislation to allow "eavesdropping and obtaining phone and internet records" on suspected felons. I do understand that an ISP will have to comply with federal requests for records if they need it. I do not have a problem with that but I disagree that my municipal council or some media organisation ( eg Itunes or Sony) have a right to request this data from my ISP.
It appears that Microsoft Windows 10 will be able to access my passwords, my email and picture files if it requires to do so. I ask the question why is it necessary for MS Windows to have need to do so? Targetted advertising? You don't need access to my email or picture files for that. FaceBook does a good enough job already!
I will have a good look at the terms and conditions before agreeing to Windows 10. Sorry for the rant. I think it is very important that we do not give up our right to privacy to governments or big business.

True; whether Apple or M$, those entities have and continue to collect information on you too. Linux may or may not (a little paranoid since other supposed open source entities such as Google Chrome has also collected data on you and whose to say Oracle with Virtualbox isn't collecting information on me either) be the only entity that doesn't collect information on you. I use Iron Browser by the way; supposedly the developers of Iron stripped out all the call home features that are part of Chrome but, again, who really knows. lol

VPN is even better, but I'm too cheap to do so. Besides, you still have to have an entity to handle your VPN unless you are so rich to own your own servers.

I think the '5 eyes' have CHS (Compulsive Hoarding Syndrome).
Four fundamentals:

1. Difficulty processing information
2. Problems in forming emotional attachments
3. Behavioural avoidance
4. Erroneous beliefs about the nature and value of possessions

Also, one must consider that this information can get into the hands of hackers. If the best security experts in the US government can't protect their data, who can?

No one can Bilbo. That's why I constantly change my VM's MAC address (around twice a year) as well as recover from a gold standard quite often. I also, today for the first time since running VMs, decided to change the SID on my VM just because I can. The only way to protect privacy is to mask yourself out of contention. Even that is not 100% a guarantee. The strategy does give me a nice false sense of security though. lol

I just thought you guys/gals would like to know, I now have windows 10 installed on my husbands computer. A good friend sent me the direct link without updating to install it. You can get it from Microsoft or pm me and I will send it to you.

Good for you Molly. Hope you husband enjoys the new experience. I can tell you that each time I boot the OS it boots faster and faster and the systems becoming more responsive. Only issue is hibernate and sleep and Virtualbox and my mouse from waking up from hibernate. I believe these issues will resolve themselves eventually. I am liking Win10 even more then Win8.1 now.

Glad to hear that Lyle, I might get brave someday and update my windows 7 that I have on my main computer. I have linux fedora on the other drive and use only that cuz I love it, .

Thanks Odin but there seems to be a problem, I don't know what yet but the screen went black but the icons are still there. I will post back later when I know more.
Now he losing his passwords for his banking, he puts them in and the work and when he returns to his pc after being idle, they are gone.

EDIT: There is just the one file that we are having the problem with and it is the one Master Card but all the other accounts are fine. So... maybe it is the Master Card site that is the problem when everything else works.

To be fair this is/was a Win7 VirtualBox VM with the absolute minimum requirements for Win10.

But did get there.



Starting Gimp was almost the same as a new install, Some time spent "searching for fonts" and "new plugins"
Already getting reports of people having problems with a new Gimp installation in Win10
Seems to work here but early days.

Well, I am surprised! My notebook is beaving itself under W10 - no problems whatsoever and that is a surprise.

I have tried to get my reserved W10 copy for my main PC but Microsoft keep saying 'please wait until you are notified, we are still honing W10 for your PC'.
