as requested.
You can now select a pattern
and tick use pattern instead of solid color.
This updates to version 2.0 of the script for GIMP 2.8

preview below

Edit: fixed spelling mistake of "insted" to "instead" in version 2.1
Now i am expecting a pattern "showdown" :hehe

Nice suggestion O,
very simple change/addition but opens a whole new door to new creations i think

Trandoductin, thanks for your kindness to give a pattern addition to the script, but it doesn't work as I thought it 'd be. If you could add the colour and pattern keeping the layers at the end as then we could play with layer mode.
Apart from that, I don't get the colour I chose. Sorry, but it doesn't work for me. :(
This the what says in error console.

Issabella,
I just downloaded the script and made a first test:
it keeps the layers, as you asked

...and:
the second parameter of the instruction which fails on your trial is the "grow distance", has to be an integer, it seems...which value did you put in?

Is it possible for you to upload/share what you have (as an .xcf) just before you run the script? I don't know how to reproduce your error.

How does the script work? Do I need to add layers and selections? That's where I'm confused. It doesn't seem to work on an image.. all I get is layers of what the bump map does, not the result of the bump mapped image. It would be nice if the script came with a set of instructions.

It applies the effect to the active layer (that you current select) and it applies to the shapes/text that are not transparent.

so if you create a layer with a solid circle it'll apply it to the circle.
if you create a layer with text, it'll apply it to the text.

instruction is/was pretty simple in the very first post of this thread
quote "Create your art/text/shapes (in black or another color). Then have that layer selected and run the script."

requested by Issabella to have color layer as well so she can play with layer modes.
here's version 2.2 for GIMP 2.8
http://gimpscripts.com/2014/06/double-bump-map-effect/
it'll create a color layer along with pattern layer (layers are named as such).
But it defaults the color layer to COLOR-MODE to color the pattern layer. Change modes as you please.

Thank you so much trandoductin, It seems to be so nice but in my computer it keeps not giving any result for me, I think it's a problem on my side but I don't know what is. I thank you your interest in my request. :) :tyspin

Why don't try creating a new layer with just a solid color circle, and then running script on that layer and see what happens.
I can only run into errors when i don't create a new layer with any art. and run the script on background but my error is different from yours, it's complaining that there's no selection. It doesn't complain about selection-grow like your error.
