Worked on this for a while.
I know it isn't perfect, but I had the idea and thought I'd run with it.
I think the Gimp Chat text needs more contouring of some kind, to make it seem as if it's going around the world better.
Maybe by using a layer mask, or perhaps some feathering or some such effect.
Let me know what you guys think and if you might have a solution to the Gimp Chat text,
and or how to make all the text better in this type of animation.

WOW!!! That's really great Wallace. You have 3 animations going at the same time! Since the text is rotating around the whole thing, I think the letters should all be in the same direction, easier to read. But that's just me. It's beautiful!! Did I hear you say you were going to do a tutorial for us? :jumpclap :coolthup :hehe

Thanks Pat625.
I'm glad that you like it and you may want to have your hearing checked, or something like that. :hehe
I'm sorry to say... that a tut for this would be very long.
Not to mention being extremely involved.
Also doing this without GAP is quite a tedious endeavor and would take forever to explain.
A tutorial, made by me, would be out of the question.
That isn't to say that someone else couldn't take on the challenge. ;)

That's a neat concept Wallace!
Is the XCF file too big to upload? I think it's cool but was curious in case anyone wanted to tweak it or try your technique.

This is cool Wallace, isn't there some kind of "map to sphere" function in Gimp? I think that may help your Gimp Chat text?

I think I still have it, but it's after all was merged into the final gif.
It wouldn't be of much use if I uploaded it.

I use a photo of a world map and the "Spinning Globe" animation script to make the spinning globe.
Then made some text to path for the outer text.
Using the outer text paths, I rotated the paths 45° 10 times to the right.
The inner text was lens distorted and moved out to the left and in from the right.

Here's the map image I used.
I had to scale the map to make it an equal square.
The image is 2700X1350, so I scaled it to 1350X1350 and then ran Spinning Globe on it.

Here's the XCF of the text.

Fonts used were
Inner text: taller Ultra-Condensed
Outer text: Serif Bold
By the way... you could use any old fonts you like.
These are only the fonts that I used.

Thanks Warrior.

Yeah It did take a few minutes.
So I went and made another.
This one is only sightly better.
The outer text still suffers form the jaggies.
Even though I used text to path to create it.

wallace: whew! i shudder at the thought of all that work! but it pays off well, the animations look great. i prefer the text in the second one (because it's all in the same direction, i agree with pat 625 on that one) and the globe in the first one because i somehow found that more restful to look at. i thought the speed on both animations was a bit high, but that may be because i had a bad migraine for two days.
