Can someone help me out here?

GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: New User

Hey guys I'm trying to get the background of this image to be transparent, but I just can't figure out why it won't go transparent! I even use the eraser and color to alpha but it won't work. Can someone help me out please? Thanks in advance.

Right click the layer, and hit Add Alpha Channel.

There are a couple of ways to do this.
One of the best ways is to use a Layer Mask, as seen in the image below.

To add a Layer Mask to your image. Right click on the layer and select Add Layer Mask
The dialog seen below will open, giving you many options.

The dialog below will open and choose White Full Opacity.

Then paint Black on the Layer Mask to make Transparent and White for full opacity.
When done painting on the layer mask and you're happy with it.
Right click on the layer again and select Apply Layer Mask.

To preserver transparency, save as .png or .gif

Note: Be sure to select the layer mask before you begin painting the white or black.

Ok I am at the part where I have added the layer mask. When I erase it goes transparent. What do you mean when you say paint black on the layer mask. How do I know where the layer mask is?

Use the black to paint, when you add your layer mask, it will be to the right of the layer, it will show two layers side by side. click the one on the right and it will have a white border around it. Paint when that is selected

The layer mask is next to the layer that has the image.
When you select the layer mask. Begin to paint on your image with black.
You will see the parts of the image disappear or go transparent that you paint on.
When you paint over any of the black with white, those parts of the image will becomes visible again.

I was wondering do we have a script that does the same thing ? if not better

There is a Gimp script at the Deviart link. In the upper right corner hit the Download button. If the script opens in your browser use File, Save page as...

Here's the results of from the script. It's best to use a thick font, I used Baltar.

Wallace, I noticed in your screen shot that you have Photo-shop plugins running in Gimp. I thought we couldn't do that anymore.

Install the pspi plugin and configure it and it will work.
I'm using it on Windows 10 and Gimp2.8.14...

The pspi.exe file I uploaded is for windows.
Sorry...
I know nothing about Linux.
