Appreciate the comments Pat. Used a few G'MIC presets. Anisotrophic smoothing (click here for settings; may need to play with Gradient Smoothness and Sharpness sliders.), Sketch (click here for settings used. This one's slow as molasses (so I uprezzed to the final size afterwards to help, but still slow as molasses)), and Local Orientation (play with the radius setting). Some paint/clone/healing brush work too.

Sounds like it took a lot of time and effort, but beautiful results!
