What can cause a computer/laptop to overheat?
I had mine on for only about an hour this afternoon and it was hot on the touch pad, turned itself off and I could not turn it on again straight away.
So I left it for a bit...hoping it might cool down. Turned it back on and shut it down properly. Left it a while longer before turning on again. Should I be worried that it is on it's way out?
I have had this pc on for hours before and it hasn't done this to me.

Could be a few things, but most likely dust/blockage in one of the air vents or fans. If it's a laptop you should see several holes in the case, usually at the bottom or sides. Unfortunately it might need to be opened for proper cleaning!

Are you using the laptop while it is on your lap? I have seen people have problems with this because their legs block the airways.

Maybe it can shed some light on why things are heating up.
The article also covers a few common remedies for such issues.

Never on my lap but other than a over tray on a desk.

Sorry saul been off for a couple hours and didn't see your reply till just now. It is a Toshiba Sattellite notebook.

By the way I found a place in my city that does computer repairs (I assume that means services too) and have asked them for a quote - by email. I wouldn't dare take it apart. [I am not techy enough and it scares me that I might do something more wrong.]

I'd also suggest purchasing a can of compressed air and spraying into the vents.
Before and after using a vacuum.
Being careful to keep the spray can level, without tilting during spraying.
