RAW image format

GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: New User

Hi. I'm a new user and am simply using Gimp to apply some tonal edits and a border to some art photos.

I want to import images from my Nikon D40 in RAW format. These come across to the PC as .NEF files, which is Nikon's raw image file format. These are recognised by Photoshop and open without problem, but Gimp doesn't seem to recognise them. Is there a way I can open them please?

Did you try installing UFRAW plugin for Gimp?
Warning, my comment is purely theoretic, I do not have .NEF files to test

Thanks. Looks complicated to install for a non geek running windows, but I'll try.
