Brain the size of a planet and still bored.

This is a little study of mixing materials. Bonus points if you know which famous character the quote is inspired by!

Nice one Griatch. Marvin the paranoid android from The Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy inspired the quote. The character is very expressive and I like the way you have rendered the metal hands.

An awesome piece of work Griatch! Did you go this from imagination or reference? The distortion of the features due to the fists is nicely done and I love the range of colours you've used. Also there's an impressive range of brightness values in this. Looking forward to more!

Wooo! I love how you shade with more than the skin color itself. That's always been kinda a fear of mine that I will ruin something if I do that. xD

The metal hands throw me off a bit, I think because the joints on the hands are looking right at us as opposed to them showing an edge..That's probably my perception not an actual problem. xD

Excellent use of warm and cool colors to create a well-rounded face. Perfect expression.

I installed Krita, but have not had a chance to try it yet. Beautiful results as this demonstrates. But it is not the program that does it!

Yes, you are the only one to know (or bother) to figure out the quote. It felt like a fitting reference. I'm glad she comes across as expressive despite being, well, partly metal.

Yes, I worked quite a bit to get the values down; I have started to test out the effects of autoleveling occationally, after recommendations in these forums, and it helps to bring the ranges a little more in order (I do tend to work with pretty stark contrasts overall, so over-saturation can be an issue at times, due to different monitors).
I used a reference for the pose of the hands, but otherwise it's all imagination. Glad you like it!

Thanks for the feedback! I've found that one can add quite a lot of other colors to skin; it's often useful to experiment. If you are afraid of ruining things, try it on a separate layer (or a duplicate of your image if you use mixing brushes, like here).
What do you mean by "the joints of the hands", more precisely? The knuckles? Or the joints between the fingers? Could you elaborate on what you mean?

The Ex Machina character (cool movie) strikes me as having a more fragile appearance, but sure, I can see where you are coming from.


Glad you like the expression, and the use of color - I did for once do the shading in grayscale and colored it afterwards; it's easy to get a rather monochrome result from that, so I spent lots of work to flesh out the color scheme.
Whereas I've worked in GIMP for many, many years, Krita is moving ahead now on the painting side I think (GIMP has stated that from-scratch painters are not the main target audience, so I guess it's not too surprising). I find myself using Krita more and more, mixed with some MyPaint for the pure no-nonsense joy of it. But as you say, all these programs could produce the same result, just with slightly varying workflows.
