Has this Happened.....

to any one else?

Windows has overtaken all of my picture defaults. Irfanview was managing them and I think with the last update they all went to windows icons. I just downloaded and installed the latest Irfanview and made all pictures/images default in Irfanview with no success. What is the problem?

Windows 10 does the same with mine. I just right click and open with (something else). I think its just windows default updating procedure. Everything goes back to default.

Strange, but not to me.
I went thru all automatic updates of my Windows 10 but still when I click on an image it opens in Irfanview (I didn't reset the "open with").
So far I was lucky, presumably...

I haven't experienced that issue, with any of windows updates thus far.
Image Glass is what I use to view all my png, gif and jpg,
as well as any other image file.
I don't use any of the windows provides apps by default.
Don't know what might be causing that issue with your setup Sallyanne.
It could have something to do with File Associations, but I can't be 100% sure of that.
Have you tried to uninstall the most recent windows update?
To see if this does anything to fix the issue?

Indeed, this happened to me before too, but not recently. Not really a fan of the Windows apps for image viewer; like Irfanview a heck of a lot better.

I feel the same way about windows apps as you do Lyle.
Irfanview is a good program that I've used in the past.
I'm trying something new this time, as an experiment.
Been using Image Glass for a few months now and I like it a lot.

Wallace I don't like playing around with my settings too much.....eg. I had my control panel open yesterday to see what the picture defaults were but now I've lost a few important icons on my taskbar :gaah

I have used Irfanview forever too Lyle. Usually download it whenever I get a new computer. And I don't understand the windows ones.
@dinasset and therein lies my problem, I saw something about the defaults changing but was in the middle of doing something else so just clicked ok to get it out of the way.

IrfanView is a very good choice; another image viewer I used more frequently was FastStone Image Viewer. XnView is a nice one as well. All 3 are lean on disk space, resources and have portable versions by their developer. My only caveat with IrfanView is I think it uses a download wrapper, so use caution on install. The download link from the IrfanView web site links to CNET. I believe FastStone and XnView are hosted on their developer websites so most likely OK if you download from there.

Just did a restore AGAIN and got my icons back on the taskbar (shortcuts, time etc)
The Restore didn't complete successfully and I have a feeling it hasn't the last couple times. Pictures are still opening in the Windows environment too

No I haven't checked for Malaware Wallace. Although I have Avast running 24/7 and the web shield is on.

If you Right-Click on a JPG or PNG image,
select properties and in the General Tab under Opens with.
Does it show that your image file is being opened with IrfanView?

In my screenshot below, you can see that my JPG image files open with ImageGlass 3.

If when you're in image properties and the image file doesn't say that it opens with the program you specify.
Click the change button and make the change to the program you want to use and see if that does anything.

If your image files don't say that they open with the program that you've selected to use.
That would indicate that there's a file association issue, concerning your image files.

Whoo hoo.

Something I could do in windows picture environment.
After opening the picture I still was able to go open with > Irfanview and given a checkbox to open all these file types the same way from then on. I have now got little red icons all over again from jpgs and png's. I still have to do it with other file types. Thanks Wallace

Yes but because it is a bug the next update will probably reset the defaults. It is just as easy to right click>open with in my opinion.

Until they fix the bug anyways.

I find this "bug" strange, because I haven't noticed this changes/bug on my system.
This isn't happening with my machine.

Seems to have only happened to some specific machines. Could be linked to time of update i am not sure.
Mine just updated 3 days ago and i still get the same thing. Properties set to default.

Maybe, but I have no issue with my "defaults" being reset.
I check for Windows Defender Definition updates everyday.
Then there's "Patch Tuesday", every second and forth Tuesday of the month.
I always check for these windows updates/patches, on the days they're suppose to have been released.
These patches may be released by Microsoft on these days of the month,
but If you wait for the auto update to install then, as they should.
The updates/patches might not happen on the same days the're released.
This could also have something to do with the way Microsoft is utilizing people's bandwidth to share updates,
known as "Windows Update Delivery Optimization"?
This is however only speculation on my part.

I know IrfanView views XCF files, do the others?
