I'm re-designing Umia, one of my comic book characters at the minute. Here's a few ideas I've been playing about with (any critiques would be much appreciated - thanks):

@Wallace: Thanks Wallace :). Yeah I see what you mean - I actually used Amanda Seyfried as a reference but it actually does look more like Madonna than Amanda!

@Sallyanne: Thanks Sallyanne :). I'm trying out different design aspects such as hair styles, poses and costume - hopefully it will all add to the final character design.

@Issabella: Hey that's really kind of you Issabella, thanks for looking :). I really enjoy my art - I've wanted to do a comic book since I was a child but never gotten round to it. I'm now 41 so am determined to get it done before I'm much older :).

You're welcome Artloader. :bigthup.
Now that you mention,
it does have qualities/features of Amanda Seyfried,
as well as Madonna.
;)

@Wallace: Heheh thanks my friend :). I guess we've now got Madonna Seyfried!

Anyway I'm diving into the final picture now. Here's the line sketch. Not sure about the boots though - I thought the rugged look might give me the steampunk styling I was after but I now think it might be too butch!

Managed to do a bit more work on Umia today.

I've given her different boots, faded out the construction lines a little and blocked in the colours.

I've added some tones and a few details. Still need to sort out her hands and add some patterns to her dress. Any critiques would be appreciated - thanks.

Sorted out her hands and made some more general refinements. Next I'm going to put a pattern on her dress.

The redesign looks much older. More like a mature 30 year old as apposed to a younger 14-20 y/o in the other one. I like the anatomy of the full figure. Very nice.

Thanks Wallace - I'm designing her to be a winged panther rider - she races in competitions.

Thanks Mokonofan - yes I see what you mean about her age - she's supposed to be late 20s so maybe I've over done the aging a bit!

Artloader, I like your adds in the image a lot. I can't say any critiques as I see it so nice. The dress has a Japanese style I like so much. If pattern on it something in that style would be nice. IMO. :clap

Nice going Artloader. I particularly like your sketching technique and it's good to see how you work.

Well I think I will call this finished now, here she is: Lady Umia Yulon, professional winged-panther racer from Suborea.

Thanks Issabella :). I was indeed thinking of a vaguely Japanese pattern, blended with steampunk elements - what do you think?

Thanks Erisian :). My workflow is continually evolving at the moment but generally speaking, I do a line sketch, then block-in colour and then add in the tones and details.

Thanks Molly - I think I will write a quick piece of micro fiction about her soon.

Artloader, I love your japanesse pattern design. I think it matches perfect on the dress. I'm longing for seeing more new steps. Well done!!! :bigthup :clap

Thanks Issabella, glad you like the pattern :) - actually this is the finished painting so I won't be updating it any more but I will probably do more paintings of Umia.

For now I have written a piece of micro fiction about Umia. The following piece is supposed to be an audio diary entry from Umia.

The Audio Journal Of Lady Umia Yulon

Date: Wutanday 17th Ortumum 7117

Time: 06:13 hours

“The sun rise is breath-taking this morning. I’m taking Torina out for our morning flight. “

“It’s silly but I’ve often dreamed of going all the way up through the atmosphere and touching those planetary rings above us. Beautiful.”

“Anyway enough nonsense, back to the interval training.”

“We’ll warm up for another 10 minutes and then do the first sprint.”

“Wait … what was that?”

“Someone’s shooting!”

“There!”

“They’re coming for us Torina! Fly like the wind girl!”

“No!”

“No no no no!”

“Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!”
