3D extrusion (SOLVED)

GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: New User

Would somebody mind giving me a step by step guide to 3D extruding a background layer for an image, I have made my canvass bigger (then tried all possible computations of the >filter>render>3D extrusion) could it be I'm using the wrong patterns to try to get the effect I'm looking for, (ideally emulating Warriors fantastic result with interlocking 3D text tut), I want to try and make something a little different - in Peace RJKD

RJKD - I have just had a qick play and I cannot get the filter>render>3D extrusion to work.

Normally for such effects I use a couple of 3D extrusion scripts inder Script Fu. One is 3D Text and the other is Graechan's Extrude from paths.

I first extended the image boarders a bit and then
ran the 3D Extrusion By GnuTux on your image.
Using the settings shown below.

I also lightened the extrusion layer,
using Color>Curves.

I wasn't putting any depth on the extrusion - duh :oops:

Oh dear me ... make it 2 x duh :oops:

It seems the extrusion layer goes below the active layer ...and because I saw no extrusion on screen, I made my original comment ...but we seniors are absolutely allowed such moments!!

The larger the image, the larger the depth needs to be.
