Patterns not keeping name

GIMP Version: 2.8.14
Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

Hi, my name is Tom and I have a problem with patterns.
I downloaded some .png pattern files today and renamed them from their original names to something I could relate to. In this case I renamed them to hexagonal 001 to hexagonal 020.
I put them in my users folder and refreshed gimp.
The patterns are shown in gimp but the names of them when I list them in gimp are "created with gimp" and I noticed some others also that are not the original hexagonal like a couple of bricks that are also named "created with gimp"
Any ideas on how to go about fixing this so they have the names I want and not "created with gimp"
I used Irfanview to batch rename them so it's easy to rename them again. :gaah

Have you saved these patterns using the file extension of .pat?

Open your downloaded .png file with GIMP, save it as file name hexagonal020.pat (.pat for pattern)
Then it'll be available as pattern in pattern's menu.

I did originally change all of the .png files to .pat
When I refreshed gimp, every one had a error
so I just renamed the originals and left them as .png
I was just looking at the metadata of them and in the comments it says "created with GIMP"
Just looking around for a way to take the comment off to see if that would fix it.
Xnview lets me see but not remove it, irfanview doesn't show the comments.

The default pattern name is taken from the Image Properties.
If no name is added, within the image properties, under the Comment tab.
The name is given the default name, which is Created with Gimp.

If you right-click on any of the pattern images named Created with Gimp and select Open Pattern as Image.
Then go to Image>Image Properties,
click on the Comment Tab at the top of the image properties dialog and change it's name to whatever you like,
or clear it.
Then export as a .png file, replacing the original .png file with the changed comment one.
Refresh your patterns and it should appear with the name given in the comment tab of the image properties,
or if comment was cleared display it's file name.

This depends on the way you changed the file extension.
Changing a files extension without using Gimp to export the files with the proper file extension.
can cause errors.

An example would be,
if you selected a .png image file from your Pictures folder.
Right-clicked this image file and change it's file extension to .pat.
Then place this image into Gimp's pattern folder.
This will cause errors in Gimp similar to the error below.
