My gimp will not open. It gets as far as looking for data files then it says it has stopped working. Thinking it may have been corrupted I installed another and on the page where you can uninstall programs it says it was updated - today's date.
I tried to do a clean install before and couldn't even uninstall it.
The problem cannot be my computer (I hope) as other programs are running.

Downloaded and install revo, uninstalled gimp.
Did a new install of another downloaded gimp and the same thing is happening

I have a 2.9.3 gimp on my pc and it is working. No plugins or scripts with it yet

though. I stopped reading your last answer too soon . Didn't save my user files but scripts and plugins are still there (whew)
So I didn't run CC before installing another gimp (I didn't see that part of your reply)

The 2.9.3 is a portable and I have had it on my pc for some time now. I don't use it very often because of it's limitations. Seen too many bad reports about 2.8.16 so have stayed with 2.8.10

Could have something to do with your antivirus software.
Have you tried turning it off and then trying Gimp?

Could be. I ran a scan earlier and saw that it wanted to shut down the computer and restart which I didn't do. I'll try that first then I'll try turning it off.

You could try and delete your Gimp user profile and see if that works.

Just thought I'd try a system restore but I don't have any restore points. Must be something different with Win 10?

You don't have to delete your Gimp user profile.
You can just move it to a different location, or on a flash drive and then try starting Gimp.

System Restore is available and fully functional in Windows 10,
however, the bad news is that this feature is turned off by default.

The proposed solution (for checking the possible error):
rename the c:\users\<your user name>\.gimp-2.8 folder to .gimp-2.8-old
Start Gimp.
Gimp will detect the missing Gimp profile and re-create it.

Said it couldn't create the brushes folder. rest were ok and gimp finally opened. OK now what do I do?


Closed it and it opened again without any error messages. Do I need to check my other brushes for errors, I still have the default ones but only them.

I don't know why Gimp couldn't create the brushes folder.
Close Gimp and create the user brushes folder yourself.
Then see if Gimp will open normally.
