Hi,

Maybe this has been discussed here. But for interest sake, I would like to know which of the operating systems mentioned above is being used by most GIMP users.

Stay well.

I use the GNU operating system running the Linux kernel (I do not consider Linux to be an "operating system"). Specifically, I use the Slackware distribution of GNU.

99.99% of the time I used GIMP 32-bit on Win-7 64-bit platform (use 32-bit GIMP to retain use of all the cool GIMP plugins that don't have 64-bit compiles; that's quickly being remedied, but I will stick with the tried and true until GIMP 2.8 comes out and then go 64-bit all the way). I do use Ubuntu GIMP (via VM) occasionally for the few filters that have not Windows GIMP compile (rare they are, but MAZE5 is one of them even though I had to figure out how to compile it myself for Ubuntu). :)

I started using GIMP in jan 2003 when I made my then new Dell laptop multiboot - red hat and windows 2000
there was even a plugin (?) that let me load and save Amiga IFF files which was great because I have lots of Amiga pictures. I have not been able to find something similar for my newer GIMP versions. :hoh

eventually I discovered portable apps and used portable GIMP on my windows 2000 for many years.

a few years ago I updated my linux to Ubuntu. My old Dell was retired last summer when it's screen died and I now have a Toshiba laptop which I also made multiboot this time with Ubuntu 10.04 and windows 7

I spend 95% of my time in Ubuntu, but I like using GIMP in any system I happen to be in. My only use for windows these days is basically for AfterEffects. I have made special effects using AE when I was in Los Angeles and still use it for projects today.

I've never really cared for windows. you have to spend lots of time keeping it clean and safe. I never have to worry about that in linux. I use portable programs in windows because it helps keep things "light". People have always been amazed that my windows system boot up quickly. And I never get viruses. But, as I said, that takes work. And I'd rather spend time having fun. :geek

I use Linux Mint on my laptop and have xubuntu installed on my desktop. I have fedora loaded on a LiveUSB which I use sometimes. And I also like Sabayon. Well, suffice it to say all Linux Distros. Gimp rocks on all of them. I have a dvd with everything a gimper could want and if I switch systems or dual-install I set up gimp just for me -- buffet for one.

OK; I admit I use IE. lol

All the GIMP forums that I've frequented seem to favor Windows over Linux as far as number of users are concerned. Only one forum even came close (believe it was 65% Windows and 35% Linux for the most part that used GIMP). Sad that Windows users, arguably the majority of users of GIMP appears to get much less support then the numbers dictate. I do my best to be the squeaky wheel though. lol

I hear you Lyle that is what was always concerning me about test releases of Gimp (odd number versions).Windows users out there number pretty high and we love sending bug reports! (were used to it with windows anyways) :P

So come on already give us a windows install with every Linux release please.
Sorry some of us just can't get Gimp to compile on Windows.

Although I have Ubuntu and Win 7 x64 installed on the one machine, and vista on my laptop I mainly use windows.
The stats from GnuTux are interesting as they confirmed my suspicion that Gimp is mainly used by win users. And believe me if I could compile a windows version I would. Unfortunately my programming skills are minimal and I am doomed to be an "end user"!

For Gimp it's as follows:

95% of the time I used GIMP 32-bit on Win-7 64-bit platform (because I didn't know there was a 64 bit Gimp and I have heard the compatability is better with the 32 bit)
The remaining 5% is done a Ubuntu Linux laptop.

Browsers:
IE 90% (Windows)
Firefox 8% (Linux)
Chrome 2% (Linux)

Sad that Windows users are unable to support themself as the linux users do
Because the support don't come from the sky, come or because strictly needed by the marketing of commercial software, and here are the Windows users to win the best support, or come from (part of) the same users

but who can really complain for the lack of support are MAC users of Open Source SW, Win users have to wait a bit but after no much usually a installer is provided , Mac users may wait ages without luck

PS before reply, please remember that i too was a Windows user and still i use Win more often then linux

I have to agree completely with you, I am glad I do not have to use a Mac, as I would hate having to wait all that time.
What is the current GIMP Mac version at?
