Pat, a difficult image to post-process
Tried with a "strange" curve (attached) to get a quite good outcome

no special action, just played the filter (strong) but choosing Color as paint-layer mode and a Gimpressionist Feathers small preset

The ladybugs looked brighter on my home screen. I tried your technique on Oscar. I like it better this way.

Both outcomes look very nice, Pat.
Definitely that (simple) technique is particularly suitable for cats, Lucy and Oscar emerge clear and fluffy
