Hello all of you beautiful people! I have been searching all day for the information I need, but I can't find it. I have made some leaf silhouettes that I want to use in a couple different ways as animated brushes (image pipes) in gimp. I watched tutorials about how to save the brushes correctly. I know I have to set ranks to the number of layers, as well as the cell count. Far as I can tell, I've been doing it correctly. I got 3 of my brushes to work and gimp seems to like them. However, any others I try to make and put into gimp just causes gimp to crash. I take them out, and gimp works just fine. I'm so frustrated! I just want to make some autumn art with a specific effect that I can only achieve a certain way! :( I hope someone out there can help me here.

Thanks for your time and efforts!

Does your export screen look something like this?

Maybe post one of the brushes somewhere, so that we can try if this happens for us too?

Update:

I am having a recurring problem where I can get some of these brushes to work for a little while without crashing gimp. Then the next thing I know, I have to completely remove all of them, even the ones that did work, because they crash gimp too. Ugh!

Yes, my export screen does look like that, just different numbers and such, of course. My cell sizes are bigger, is there a limit to the size they can be?

Originally, I thought this was a good idea! I was planning to share them with the public anyways once I got them working! I can't upload any of them as attachments because they exceed the size limit, and I can't link to where I do have them uploaded because I get a message about my post being too spamy for a new user... So no off site links... Is there any other way I can share so someone can test them?

I have put a lot of work and effort into making these brushes. It would be such a shame if we can't get them working as I had forseen. At least, for now, the normal .gbr version of them work just fine...

Sounds to me like the brushes are too large. Try downsizing each layer of the brush and see if that works. If so downsize them all (brushes) if possible. What is the size now?

Well, they started at around 1000 px in each direction. But the ones that did work were that size. I tried downsizing the ones that didn't work to around half of that, about 500 px in each direction. They still did not work. Should I make them smaller? The images I'm using are simply black silhouettes of the leaves on transparent layers. Each layer is a different version of the leaf. I want one where each layer has a smaller version of the image than the layer above it. I want another one where the leaf is rotated by an additional 45 degrees on each consecutive layer. I never put them in greyscale mode, but I'm not sure that matters...

I even followed advice I saw elsewhere and deleted the whole gimp 2.8 folder in my user directory after backing it up. It fixed another problem I was having and helped me find out the big problem was my brushes.

Should I maybe completely uninstall and then reinstall gimp?

No need to uninstall GIMP.
Try placing and saving them in grayscale mode.

Okay. I did retry resizing them down a bit more. I resized one just a few moments ago down to 300 px in each direction. I put that in there and ran gimp. So far, it is working! It's event the one that never worked! I'm about to try another one and see if gimp crashes or not!

Pleased you have something working.

1000x1000 will be big brushes, 8 cells RGB and the brush files size here are 32 MB.

Are you a brush junkie? It could be that there are just too many brushes loaded into memory. Remove some and try again.

Creating a brush? Does not need separate layers, a strip works as well, just set the correct cell size, or if happier with layers use layers.

examples:
8 cells with decreasing size brushes. Use incremental. http://imgur.com/AF65VOy

8 cells with rotated brushes. If you want one following the other, then use incremental as above.
If you want a brush to use the mouse direction then really only 4 cells required but as an example: http://imgur.com/CprD1Ev

Thanks! This information is helpful! In my installation of gimp, 1000 x 1000 is fine for simple, non animated brushes, but when used for the dimensions of animated brushes it crashes gimp. I found that 300 x 300 is perfect!
No, I'm not a brush junkie. I do have a lot of brushes, but I haven't had any problems with gimp having trouble loading them all. I really just prefer to create everything from scratch, instead of using other's resources... It makes it so much more exhilarating!
Being a corel paintshop pro user, I'm used to creating picture tubes on a single layer. They work pretty much the same way as gimp animated brushes. However, I really prefer using separate layers because it simplifies my work load as I can flip or rotate them separately. :D

Thanks so much everyone!!! You guys have really helped me out! And in such a quick time frame! The problem was the dimensions of my brush. I just didn't downsize it enough when I tried it the first time!

For anyone who is interested, I have included an image attachment of an example of the kind of effect I was trying to achieve. It's a bit rough as I haven't polished my dynamics setting fully yet. But I'm already loving the way it works!
