Noob again.

When I click the bold letter A in the toolbox, a semi-transparent dialogue-thingy shows up over the image which I want to add a text layer to, but the indicated size in the thingy is too small... When I increase the size in the semi-transparent dialogue-thingy, and then move the cursor to where I want to add text and begin typing, whatever I type does not go into the new text layer I am trying to create, it goes instead into the semi-transparent dialogue-thingy as if I were attempting to specify text size (but I'm not, I want to enter text onto a new text layer!).

If I move the cursor to where I want to add text and then click before I begin typing, then my typing does go where I want it to, but the result of clicking is that the text size in the semi-transparent dialogue-thingy gets reset so that my text is too small.

Please someone help.

For now, ignore the semi-transparent dialogue-thingy. Instead use the options in the Tool Options - usually below the tool box where you select the Text Tool. This sets the global settings for all the text you type. Set the Font, font size and font colour here. When you are done typing, use the Move tool to move the text into its final position. Notice that a new layer is created for the text.

Later, you can use the semi-transparent dialogue-thingy to set characteristics for individual characters.
