Multiple Pictures onto one canvas

GIMP Version: 2.8.16
Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: New User

As a new user I can't work out how to do the following ... its surely covered but I can't find under Search.

Open one picture and enlarge canvas to accommodate additional pictures.
Open additional pictures and adjust px size to approximate size of first picture
How can I then drag/drop these additional pictures on the one canvas and see them so as to improve layout before flattening ready for saving as one jpeg?
(If I import additional jpeg's via File/Open as layers then I simply end up with a picture stack)

Open as images as layers.
Then Image->Canvas size (and change canvas size to anything you want).
Then use move tool to drag layers around to wherever you want around the canvas.

It seems as though you would need to either resize the canvas,
making it larger.
To accommodate these other images,
or these added images would need to be resized to fit appropriately onto the canvas.

Reducing the size of the added images could be one option.
While keeping the original image as is.

Or reducing all the images,
including the original image to fit a given canvas.

Of course adding an alpha channel would be necessary.
In order to be able to move the images around,
to have them look like one image.

It is generally a bad move to flatten an image. Keep your layers intact and EXPORT to jpg.

Then SAVE as a xcf file. This will preserve your layers. Use this for any future editing.
