I've just started using gimp and all of a sudden my tool boxes have disappeared. Sometimes I can get a tool box by going into Tools and selecting New Toolbox, but I can't get back to my 3 nice panels. ( 2 panels of tools on each side and the work area in the middle. ) I'm sure it has to do with tool options in preferences, but I don't know how to get those 3 nice panels like I used to have.

Gimp menu Edit -> Preferences -> Window Management
click 'Reset Saved Window Positions to Default Values'

Then restart Gimp

Set up your panels and then select "save window positions on exit"

This will (on your next startup) open GIMP with the last window or panel positions you had.
Do you use single window mode?

See also "Windows>Recently closed docks". But before you do so, hit the [tab] key a couple of times. [tab] is used to hide/show the varoius "docks".
