Im using Linux mint, i want to add insane bump to my gimp registry in the gimp file but i cant find the plugin files in linux. Also when i go to download insane bump i get a text file, Do i have to add this to a text editor. And then what do i do?

How do i add this file and were do i find the Gimp plugins in linux.

This is not going to be easy for a beginner. First what version of Mint and is it 32 bit or 64bit ?

Assuming 64 bit

First the insanebump plugin from http://registry.gimp.org/node/28117 downloads as InsaneBump.py_3.txt

Rename this to InsaneBump.py Copy to your Gimp profile ~/.gimp-2.8/plug-ins and make it executable.

Insanebump uses a compiled plugin normalmap. This is included in the package gimp-plugin-registry which you should be able to install with a package manager. However this contains dozens scripts and plugins which you will never use so I have included a 64 bit version in the attachment.

Copy the file normalmap to your Gimp profile ~/.gimp-2.8/plug-ins and make it executable.

The next snag.

normalmap has a dependency libGLEW.so.2.0 which might not be in the latest Mint packages. I have seen reports of it missing. However, it might be already installed or look for the package libGLEW2 and install it if it is there.

If it is not there then the libglew.deb package is included in the attachment. Click on it and with luck there will be a message asking what to do. (install it)

I am using Ubuntu 16.04 and my gimp version is 2.8.16

I tried the contents of your attachment for Insane map. I first tried deb file which successfully downloaded the required file. How can I copy this downloaded file for my future use. I don't want to download it every time from some server. Is it possible?

After copying py file it works but when I install third file 'normalmap' I get error. Is it not necessary?

Thats odd Rich as mine loads a dialog showing a preview of each map. And it is an executable.Yours looks like it does an on canvas live preview?

Ive tried to follow the instructions but am not getting a insane bump in my list under map. Obviously im doing it wrong. Im a total beginner on linux and i have two questions

First the libGlEW map i tied installing it but i wasn't told what to do. No window appeared. Do i have to put it in the GIMP plugin file or just install it. And how?
Further you say i have to make it executable, how do i do that?

You do not download anything. The .deb file will install some files, a library file and some documentation.

You should have seen some thing like this. Hit the install button and it is done. Not required again.


The 2 files insanebump.py and normalmap both go in ~/.gimp-2.8/plug-ins. Both should show up in Filters -> Map. Check that they are executable.

Yes that is the compiled version see: http://registry.gimp.org/node/28638 There is a linux compiled version there as well.

Again which mint version are you using and is it 32 bit or 64 bit. normalmap and the .deb are for 64 bit. they do not work in 32 bit.

unzip the previous attachment. The 2 files insanebump.py and normalmap go in your Gimp profile in your home folder which is the hidden folder ./gimp-2.8/plug-ins. They should already be executable. They were when I zipped them.

press alt . (alt dot) to show/hide hidden files.

The .deb file you need to install. Try clicking on it or right-click and look for install.
You probably need to get someone familiar with linux to stand behind you and help.

Desktop: Cinnamon 3.2.7 (Gtk 3.18.9-1ubuntu3.1)
Distro: Linux Mint 18.1 Serena

Ive really done everything as instructed but still no insane bump in map under filters. It makes me want to go back to windows and thats a pity.

You may have to give the py file permission to execute. Not sure how that is done in Linux though.

Gimp has already Normal Map Filter. When I copy the downloaded Normal Map I get error. So I think downloaded Normal Map is not necessary.

Do not give up For ease install the gimp-plugin-registry package and the compiled version of InsaneBump.

Only takes a few minutes.

ive finally installed my insane bump but get the same results as you

So the results that rod gets i dont get with the previews of the different maps.
Im also not getting all the maps. Im used in windows to getting 6 diffrent maps.

Id prefer that. How can i solve this?

The search term is gimp-plugin not gimp plugin

All you need is a single 1.06 executable from here:
http://registry.gimp.org/node/28638

Once you execute it, the bump maps will be generated in your pictures folder.
I didn't read it carefully and wondered for a moment myself too, because they show in layers toolbox,
but once you close the plugin you end up with the original image.

edit: No need to give executable permissions on Linux, just drop it in plug-ins folder
Must work on Mint cause it works on Xubuntu.
