Bird B&B

A few days ago the wind blew the top off of our back porch light. Two days later I saw that we had become a bird B&B. Yesterday I noticed that we now have guests.

As long as they don't fall out and we have to feed them it's good. I had to hand feed a small hawk for 3 weeks once. I had to chop up mice from traps and feed her with a tweezers for 2 weeks then I gave her whole ones. I finally brought her home from work and let her go at home. I was one of the neatest experiences in my life. She sat on my shoulder all the way, she let me pet her on the head. Then after I let her go she flew around the house for several days. Robin's aren't as strong or tenacious.

We had the same kind of porch light, and the top blew off of ours, too. And we had birds nesting in them for several years! We put in new light fixtures and the birds had to find new places to put their nest. We never could get close enough to catch the adults feeding or sitting, but we did get a few glimpses of the babies. I miss the peeping, although it can get pretty loud at times!

You got two good photographs there of the nest and the babies inside Gms9810. I especially like the top one.

A few years ago we had a plethora of various bird nests here, including a robin's nest, mourning dove, common grackle, and the one that caused me the greatest concern since it was built on the ground and where people walk regularly, a killdeer nest. For some reason since then I haven't seen any nests in the local area.

I don't know about anyone else here, but I enjoy from time to time watching the various nest cams people put up on Ustream.

Today's update, they can barely all fit in the nest. Mother is quite put out by my continuous incursion of my back porch.
